Product Description

Product Description

On frequent trips to the UK, U.S. citizen Robert Parker was puzzled by the lack of readily available information about the British prime ministers, especially as a group. There are thick biographies of Churchill, Disraeli, and Pitt, but who were the others? There are plenty of short booklets and pamphlets for all of the monarchs but little or nothing on most of the fifty-three PMs. As an American, Robert was brought up on countless books of all lengths and sizes detailing the lives and accomplishments of the U.S. presidents, but he could find nothing of the sort in Britain's bookshops or tourist locations that chronicles the careers of the prime ministers. This is somewhat ironic as England is the birthplace of modern representative parliamentary government. What better way to introduce these individuals than through a short, accurate, and comprehensive review of each prime minister, briefly describing their background and influence, their role in British history and in major world events. On closer inspection, the PMs are revealed to be more colourful figures than might be imagined, whose unique personalities and individual deeds shaped important historical events. British Prime Ministers will offer a handy and accessible guide to all the UK's heads of government, thereby lifting the veil of obscurity from an all too neglected cast of characters.

About the Author

Robert Parker is a high school teacher in Indiana, USA. He has Bachelors and Masters degrees in history and combines his passion for the subject with frequent travel. He has visited six continents and over fifty countries, making more than forty separate trips to the United Kingdom alone. His grandfather was from Bridgwater, Somerset and he keeps in regular contact with his English relatives. Robert's visits to the UK inspired his interest in the prime ministers and he has now turned what began as a hobby into his first book.

Useful pen pictures 13 July 2011
By Stuart
Format:Paperback
An interesting book that provides a profile of each UK prime minister. There is nothing in depth about this book but if like me you feel the need for a brief pen picture of each of our most senior politicians through the ages then this is the book to do it.

OKAY but 10 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Amazingly, this seems to be the only book around that gives you a brief overview of all the Prime Ministers and in many ways was just what I was looking for.
My only two criticisms are -
There could be a bit less about who they married etc and a bit more about the political events during their terms of office.
It was always going to be a difficult decision as to how to handle Prime Ministers who served several terms but I think it would have been better to show each term seperately in chronolgical order.
A good read though. and a very handy reference.
Makes you feel good when watching 'The Chase' on television to hear that one of the chasers has never even heard of Henry Addington.

Great Rundown of Each Prime Minister 28 Mar 2012
By Jon Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an accessible and fact filled guide to all the men (and one woman) who've held the office of Prime Minister in Britain. It makes a great addition to any reference library. Whenever I have a curious question about a PM, I can pull this book off the shelf and get a good basis for further research. It's written in an engaging style and is well worth owning.
