Product Description

Compiled with the advice of clinical experts, this essential reference provides up-to-date guidance on prescribing, dispensing and administering medicines. The BNF details medicines prescribed in the UK, with special reference to their uses, cautions, contraindications, side-effects, dosage and relative costs. Updated every six months, the BNF reflects current best practice as well as legal and professional guidelines relating to the use of medicines. It is intended for use by prescribers in the NHS as well as by pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

This is an excellent reference book for anyone studying medicine or on a medication course,as i was. It is informative and easy to use, with a comprehensive list of medicines and even conditions at the back. Looking up medicines is a cinch, and it gives you all the known names for each one. It is easy to read and easy to understand, even for someone without much medical knowledge and remains current for quite some time, although a new edition is brought out twice a year. I have tried many other reference materials during the course of my work, but i can honestly say that this is the only one that is any good. Plus, it is commonly used by doctors, nurses, etc so you have the same information they do. The only let down is the buy-it-new price, around £26, but you can buy it used for less than a tenner on amazon, so not a problem!

Any pharmacist will tell you that the BNF is pretty much indispensable. (excuse the pun!) However, as good as this edition is, it's a real pain that the editorial board have removed the pregnancy drugs section (think it used to be Appendix 4). It's annoying these days having to look up each drug individually to assess it's potential teratogenicity.

This paperback is updated twice a year, available free to some NHS doctors and pharmacists, and sold at an astonishing list price. Through Amazon one was available at a much more reasonable price, albeit about three months after publication.

Excellent. Very good advice and basic standards. If only most GPs referred to it there would be better treatment and less illness. Get the dose right!!!!!
