Canals are part of our cultural heritage but today, what was the commercial network of the industrial revolution, has become the leisure playground of boatowners and holiday makers who wish to take the time to discover the wealth and beauty of the canal system. A holiday on board a narrowboat is a perfect way to see life afloat. If setting off at the tiller is a little daunting, this programme is just the introduction you need as to how to handle a boat, safety requirements, navigation and buying supplies.

This DVD would be ideal for anyone who had just started to think about buying or hiring a narrowboat. If like me you have already looked at a few books and got the basics like how locks work and the rules of the road etc then this repeates a lot of that kind of info.

I found the video quite repetative at times, the same clips were shown on several different occasions to "fill out" the DVD. I found myself wishing the think would hurry up on more than one occasion.

A lot of the video content is based around the protocols that someone would go through when hiring a narrowboat, indeed is seems to be, in places the video taken by a typical customer picking up his boat at the start of his holiday.

If you are totally ignorant of narrowboats and boating in general then this DVD will be fine. However if you do have some backgroung knowlegde this DVD will repeat a lot of that. It may be good for someone to see actual boats in action though.

If i had purchased this DVD for anything more than 5 pounds i would be a bit dissapointed. As a comparison I found the BW DVD "The boaters DVD" for £2.99 which runs for 40 mins much better.

I have given this DVD 3 stars

A disappointment 25 July 2011
By Garden
Really far from expectations, with a series of quite uninteresting commentaries difficult to reconcile with the title. In my opinion, not a guide at all. However, one humorous highpoint is the explication of the locks with a model narrowboat at least 3 scales smaller than that of the lock, perhaps enough to justify buying it for the laughs.
