Having collected a number of reference books on Napoleonic uniforms and equipment over recent decades, including Mr Franklin's volume on British Napoleonic artillery, I wondered whether this new volume on British Napoleonic uniforms would be of significant value in my reference collection. Would it, for example, reach the high standards set for French Napoleonic uniforms in the Histoire et Collections series, in terms of the scope of its coverage of uniform variations. I was amazed at the quality and comprehensiveness of the work. Here is the dream volume for modellers of British Army subjects of the Napoleonic period. Every regiment of the permanent army is covered, as are a range of militia units. Details of uniforms for officers, NCOs, soldiers and musicians are included, together with weapons, equipment, saddelery, and so forth. Beautifully illustrated and printed, this is a wonderful addition to the collection, and is every bit as good as Mr Franklin's previous two volumes. One can only hope that he will now turn his attention to other uniforms of the British Napoleonic period - those of the Marines, the Royal Navy, and the emigre troops - to complete the series. We might then hope for a similar treatment of the British forces during the American revolutionary war and earlier. I hope to see many more excellent volumes produced by Mr Franklin and Spellmount.
