Classic FM has made the Vaughan Williams folk song suite popular in recent years (usually in the orchestral version), but the rest of the music here isn't heard very often, unless you play in a military band - apart from the Vaughan Williams Toccata Marziale and Holst's "Hammersmith", this album has pretty much the full set of best band pieces by British composers. In my youth I played in a well-run band where some of the teachers played in the forces bands, and they were accomplished musicians who taught us a lot, so this music is tinged with fond memories and the performances here are by the same kind of people = all the music sounds like exactly what we were trying to achieve. My favourite is Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy - folk songs arranged with original instrumentation which displays a huge range of tone colour from what amounts to "half an orchestra", and has the kind of quirky twists you'd expect from a quirky composer. A little gem that will stay on my iPod nano for a long time.
