5.0 out of 5 stars book for everyone, 13 Mar 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The British Museum Dictionary of Ancient Egypt (Paperback)
This book is great for egyptology students or someone just interested in the subject. It contains loads of entries, including general subjects (women, warfare) as well as people, places and specific items (false door in tombs). To the student, it gives you a breif outline and starting point and for any beginners to the subject you could easily flick through at your own pace and learn something new every day. Each entry also has a great bibliography if you need further information. A great all rounder.

I bought this book at the British Museum a few weeks ago and it has not left my side since. It's perhaps the most informative book on Ancient Egypt I've ever come across. Perfect for hobbiests to enthusiasts to anyone who wants a comprehensive resource. The book is amazingly complex in detail and filled with amazing pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Places to Start!, 18 Sep 2009
By Christina Paul - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The British Museum Dictionary of Ancient Egypt (Paperback)
Ten years ago this book was given to me in hardcover. With a life long interest in Egypt and Egyptologists in the family, inevitably I have read a great many books on Ancient Egypt itself. Of all of the books that I own, this is probably one of my most uses because it does truly live up to its name. It is a fabulous overview of the culture, history and life of the Ancient Egptians anywhere. You can look up just about any term, place name, deity, Pharaoh, etc and you are given a great deal of good information that informs but does not overwhelm. Dr. Shaw and Dr. Nicholson have done an outstanding job of making Ancient Egypt very accessible in this little book. I highly recommend it for anyone of any age who might be interested in the subject.
