Product Description

Album Description

The fifth instalment in Dutton Epoch's ongoing series focusing on British light music features sumptuous works by Paul Carr and conductor Gavin Sutherland, along with the suite from Richard Addinsell's incidental music for Jean Anouilh's play 'Ring Round the Moon', and orchestral delights by film music legend Roy Budd ('Tricolour Overture') and Francis Chagrin ('Aquarelles'). The concertos by Gavin Sutherland (for clarinet) and Paul Carr (for oboe) are both real finds. Sutherland writes essentially in a lighter vein, taking a melodic route through a variety of idioms including the ballad style of the exquisite second movement 'Song without Words'. Carr's Oboe Concerto, played by its dedicatee Nicholas Daniel, highlights the increasing reputation of this composer; here the sorrowing threnody encapsulated in the stillness of the second movement's evocation of snow is particularly striking, while Carr's Air for Strings is uniquely compelling, an orchestral love song that bids fair to supplant Barber's celebrated Adagio for Strings.

I don't bother to leave reviews normally, but this is a special case as Paul Carr's Oboe Concerto is completely lost on this disc and not helped by the generic title. This is a contemporary (tuneful!) work that can be appreciated on first hearing, indeed the slow movement reduced me to tears when I heard it 'live'; not something that happens often these days. Let's hope that the radio stations pick up on this work and it can be heard by more people. In my experience, everyone who has heard it has been moved and I have had to purchase a copy for them; enough said! It's intuitively played here by the dedicatee, oboist Nicholas Daniel.

This is a glorious CD of quintessentially English music. The highlight has to be Paul Carr's oboe concerto of which the slow movement must surely rank as one of the most moving in the English idiom. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. There are other hidden gems by other composers, notably Gavin Sutherland's clarinet concerto and Addinsell's Ring Round the Moon suite, deftly arranged by Philip Lane.
