5.0 out of 5 stars Top value! 22 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is probably the best value collection you can get if you want to buy British light music, comprising the Hyperion British Light Music series Vol 1 - 4. Some favourite pieces are missing, but it manages to fit in most of the real classics, like Sailing By and Elizabethan Serenade, played with period charm and gusto by the New London Orchestra. I loved hearing my old favourites, and discovered some new treasures through this. I would recommend it heartily, especially if you were thinking of buying one of the discs in the series - this is much cheaper than buying them separately!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music to really listen to 19 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
These are pieces that are always good to listen to. Even if you can't put a name to them so many of them are familiar tunes. Many of them remind me of favourite radio or television programmes and it is good to find these listed along with the titles and composers. Having bought the boxed set for myself I then just had to buy another as a birthday gift. Very good value for money.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment. 10 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having looked at the previous reviews about this CD I decided to purchase. I have to say that I was very disappointed with the CD.

Being Digitally Recorded the tracks were very clean, but they were; with the exception of a few; sadly lacking in Pace, Phrasing and Atmosphere when compared to the originals.

For my money the only CD to purchase to capture this is 'The Great British Experience' 50 original light music classics.

This CD; although being Digitally Remastered; conveys the true Sound and Atmosphere of that time. This is something that cannot be reproduced.

John S. Rodwell.

These four discs have been reviewed individually as follows:

Volume 1
This disc, the first of four such collections, was well recorded in 1995 and features seventeen light classics that were very popular in their day and which will certainly pull many strings for older listeners. Part of this recognition will be due largely to the connection with radio. Eight of these pieces were used as signature tunes to very popular radio programmes dating from the WW2 days (Music while you work)through to the 1950s (such as Children's Favourites).

Beyond those obvious connections all this music, plus the music included on the follow-up discs, also clearly demonstrates the quality of the writing both constructionally and in terms of the orchestration. The term 'light' refers more to the mood of the music rather than any suggestion of its being in any way sub-standard.

The orchestra under Ronald Corp provides an excellent guide through this exploration of times past. It should prove enjoyable to anyone of all ages interested in this important period of musical history where there was so much well-crafted music of a type well fitted to its historical context.

I would therefore suggest that this disc, and the others in the series, is well worth considering by anyone with an interest in this period and in this genre of musical entertainment.
Volume 2
This disc, made in 1996, continues the series started a little while earlier and which proved to be very popular. For many listeners who listened to the radio as background music up to the mid 1950's, this selection of music will feel very familiar and will bring back many memories of time long past.

5.0 out of 5 stars British Light Music Classics 9 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Concur with everthing other reviewers have said, If you like light music then this is for you and if you are of a certain age then some of the music will take you back to some of the old radio programmes that we loved before TV took over. Well worth buying just for the signiture tunes alone, the other music is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Mother was very happy with this gift 24 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD compilation was recommended by Alan Titchmarsh on his radio show and based on this recommendation my mother requested it as a birthday gift. She is very happy with this 4 disc box set - lots of musical theme tunes to reminisce to and enjoy again. Very easy listening and a good selection across the four discs. Also efficient delivery and well pacakged in time for mum's birthday!
