Synopsis

The BRITISH INVASION series includes; Live performance material from Dusty Springfield recorded between 1964 and 1968, featuring appearances from Elton John and Burt Bacharach. Live performance material from Herman's Hermits recorded between 1964 and 1967, plus interviews with Peter Noone and other members of the original group. Live performance material from Small Faces recorded between 1966 and 1969, plus interviews with Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan. And live material from Gerry And The Pacemakers recorded between 1963 and 1965, plus interviews with the band members themselves.

Small Faces: All Or Nothing 1965 – 1968
At long last, the definitive official DVD for one of the greatest groups of the sixties (or any other decade for that matter.) Small Faces: All Or Nothing 1965 – 1968 features 26 complete performances filmed from 1965 to 1968 when the band was challenging the Who, Kinks, Stones and Beatles for domination of the charts. The DVD captures every aspect of their short but brilliant career including early Mod/R&B classics such as “What’cha Gonna Do About It”, “Sha La La La Lee” and “All Or Nothing”, timeless rockers like “Tin Soldier” and later psychedelic masterpieces including “Itchycoo Park”, and “Green Circles.” Best of all is the inclusion of eight songs from the band’s LP masterpiece Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake including “Lazy Sunday”, “Song Of A Baker” the title track and the six song “Happiness Stan” suite. In between the performances original members Ian McLagan, Kenney Jones and Jimmy Winston talk about the songs and tell the band’s history in new interviews filmed exclusively for the DVD. Also interwoven into the story are archival interviews with Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane. This DVD is one of the first four releases in the British Invasion series and is also sold as part of the British Invasion Boxset containing Small Faces: All Or Nothing 1965 – 1968, Gerry & The Pacemakers: It’s Gonna Be All Right 1963 – 1965, Herman’s Hermits: Listen People 1964 – 1969, Dusty Springfield: Once Upon A Time 1964 – 1969 and bonus fifth disc with special additional content.

Gerry & The Pacemakers: It’s Gonna Be All Right 1963 – 1965
With the exception of the Beatles themselves, no other group dominated the early years of the British Invasion like Gerry & The Pacemakers. They were the first artists to have their first three singles top the British charts, and many of their songs are now beloved classics. Gerry & The Pacemakers: It’s Gonna Be All Right 1963 – 1965 features 15 complete songs filmed from 1963 to 1965 and is the group’s first official DVD release. Included are the classics “How Do You Do It”, “I Like It” and “I’m The One”, timeless masterpieces “Ferry Cross The Mersey” and “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying” and the number one anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. In between the performances Gerry Marsden talks about the songs and tells the band’s history in a new interview filmed at the Cavern Club in Liverpool exclusively for the DVD. Also telling the story is Bill Harry, the founder of the original Mersey Beat newspaper in Liverpool that reported the birth of British rock as it was happening. The DVD bonus section includes a new solo rendition of “Ferry Cross The Mersey” filmed at the Cavern Club as well as a history of Liverpool’s Mersey beat scene as told by Bill Harry.

Herman’s Hermits: Listen People 1964 – 1969
During the mid sixties, Herman’s Hermits was second only to The Beatles in terms of record sales, but the band was more than just a pop phenomenon, crafting some of the most enjoyable music of the era. Herman’s Hermits: Listen People 1964 – 1969 is the group’s first official DVD release and features 22 complete songs filmed from 1964 to 1969 that sets the record straight on one of the most underrated bands of the sixties. Included are the classic hits “I’m Into Something Good”, “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat”, “Wonderful World”, “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”, “I’m Henry VIII, I Am” and “There’s A Kind Of Hush” as well as later masterpieces “No Milk Today”, “Listen People” and their cover of Ray Davies’ “Dandy.” In between the performances original members Peter Noone, Keith Hopwood, Karl Green and Barry Whitwam talk about the songs and tell the band’s history in new interviews filmed exclusively for the DVD. The bonus features include a 24-minute concert filmed in 1966 for Australian television, a commentary track with Keith Hopwood and Karl Green and an additional 15 minutes of exclusive interviews including the band’s great recollections about the the 1967 Hermits/Who tour.

Dusty Springfield: Once Upon A Time 1964 – 1969
Unquestionably Britain’s greatest female vocalist, Dusty Springfield made some of the finest recordings of the sixties. Dusty Springfield: Once Upon A Time 1964 – 1969 features 20 complete songs filmed from 1964 to 1969 and has all of her greatest hits and more. Included on the DVD are her early classics “I Only Want To Be With You”, “Wishin’ And Hopin’” and “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” as well as timeless hits “Son Of A Preacher Man”, “The Look Of Love” and “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.” In between the performances, Dusty’s story is told through new interviews with Burt Bacharach, singer Madeline Bell (who sang back-up for Dusty in the ‘60s) and Simon Bell (who sang back-up for Dusty from the ‘70s through the ‘90s) filmed exclusively for the DVD as well as Dusty herself via a newly discovered, previously unseen biographical interview from 1978. The bonus features include Dusty’s complete 1965 and 1966 New Musical Express Poll Winners Concert appearances as well as a duet with Burt Bacharach on “A House Is Not A Home.” This DVD is one of the first four releases in the British Invasion series and is also sold as part of the British Invasion Boxset containing Small Faces: All Or Nothing 1965 – 1968, Gerry & The Pacemakers: It’s Gonna Be All Right 1963 – 1965, Herman’s Hermits: Listen People 1964 – 1969, Dusty Springfield: Once Upon A Time 1964 – 1969 and bonus fifth disc with special additional content.

In addition, each performance has been transferred from the original master tape and includes best-possible video and re-mastered audio. Each DVD also includes a 24-page booklet with insightful and informative essays by noted rock historians as well as previously unseen photos and memorabilia and is produced with the full support and cooperation of the artists or their estates.

Initially I was only going to buy the Dusty Springfield edition of this series of DVD's, but having had a good week on a certain auction site I decided to treat myself to the box set, and boy I am glad I did!

Each DVD is a little masterpiece in its own right, and together they give a wonderful overview of pop music - other than the Beatles or Stones - of the 1960's. Each is chock full of not only the hits you would expect, but also many other songs that you may have only partially remembered or have never heard at all. The sound quality on all is outstanding, very crisp and beautifully clear. This also applies to the picture quality, which is, at times, amazing. I have seen plenty of clips from the NME Poll Winners Party in the past, and they have always been short little clips and of very poor, grainly quality. Here they have been cleaned up and, for the most part, shown in full.

Many of the interviews have never been seen before, or not for many years - especially with Dusty - and throw a new light on many aspects of the music. Here lies my only slight disappointment with the Gerry and the Pacemakers DVD, because the only interviews are with Gerry himself and Bill Harry - I would have liked a couple of others to give a different light on this talented artist.

The extras are excellent, both on the discs themselves - lots of extra songs and performances etc - and inside the cases - the booklets are works of arts themselves! For a real treat the bonus DVD - available only with the Box Set - has a set of postcards that are well worth collecting!

If you love '60s music and want just one lovely present for Christmas stick this on your list and make sure Santa knows you have been good, very good!!!

The British Invasion Box set features four dvd's and a bonus CD. The artists featured are Gerry & Pacemakers, Small Faces, Herman's Hermits and Dusty Springfield.

The great feature of the dvd's is that full versions of the songs are shown. Each dvd has at least 20 songs on them and many of the songs are live performances. The dvd's also feature interviews with surviving members of the bands. Another good feature is that you can play just the songs without the interviews and when you do this there are bonus performances as well.

The box set is very well packaged and each dvd contains a very comprehensive booklet on the artists history.

The sound and vision quality is very good considering the age of the material. The sound is mixed in 5.1 as well as stereo.

I am looking forward to more artists appearing in the British Invasion series of dvd's.

I was looking for something in the way of a period Small Faces DVD when I came across this and so ended up buying the boxed set. No regrets at all.

Pure enjoyment and brings back loads of memories of growing up as a teenager in the mid to late 1960s. For me it shows just how sterile so many of today's acts are, but then I'm just an old fogey so what do I know? Well, I do know that I like this boxed set and am very pleased that I bought it. At least I've got something decent to watch when X Factor is on.
