FIRST REGIMENT OF FOOTGUARDS.FIRST CLASS BOOK, 4 Jun 2006
This review is from: The British Grenadiers: 350 Years of the First Regiment of Foot Guards 1656-2006 (Hardcover)
As the volume has been written by an ex Grenadier Guards officer and in close association with the regiment itself, readers can rest assured that the wealth of information ( not normally available, or easily accessible to "outsiders" ) contained between the colourful covers is fully detailed and accurate in every way.
This excellent publication was honestly a treat to read, as it was packed to the hilt with a more than generous amount of fascinating detail written in a very readable style. Coupled with the wide range of excellent colour and black and white photographs, detailed time lines, maps and reproductions of early paintings, I have no doubt that it will be especially appreciated by both serving and ex Grenadiers, family history researchers, military historians together with militaria and medal collectors alike.
In a nutshell, it is a concise "unstuffy" readable Regimental History, reference work and photograph album in one beautiful volume, it includes full details of the Regiment's battle honours, key personalities, Victoria Cross winners and regimental customs, together with a resume of both its operational and ceremonial roles over its long and distinguished history.
Anyone who has had the honour of serving in this fine regiment or has any connection with it, will certainly want a copy of this brilliant title - I for one am proud to have it in my own collection!

A light touch with the Grenadiers, 23 Jun 2006
This review is from: The British Grenadiers: 350 Years of the First Regiment of Foot Guards 1656-2006 (Hardcover)
Another reviewer tells you what this book contains, so I'll mention that the narrative plus information plus history plus biography is packed into bites ranging in size from a chapter, to a section to a morsel. It is distracting! You start by hunting for information on bearskins (included in 'Grenadier Fabric', where you will find a cartoon, a photo of Crimean War veterans and a specification) and get diverted into an adjacent article on eighteenth century soldiering, and the origin of 'mess'.
I discovered Macmillan's wartime record, unkown to me, in one of the biographies ('Grenadier Gallery'.) The author has a sense of humour, and knows when and when not to air it. I enjoyed the pronunciation section (Regimental Quartermaster Sergeants: "They are never spoken of, as elsewhere in the Army, as 'RQMS' or 'RQ'. Grenadiers do not care to abbreviate in speech by using initials and can rattle out 'Kormarsarnt' in a fraction of the time it takes anyone else to say 'RQ'."). Enjoy dipping into it!

Not as Good as I hoped!, 6 Jan 2011
By David D. Lawson "A Legend in his own mind" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The British Grenadiers: 350 Years of the First Regiment of Foot Guards 1656-2006 (Hardcover)
While generally the British write the best histories, this is not one of them. It is basically one of the their standard Regimental Histories like the Famous Regiments Series which is a pity as the story of the Grenadier Guards is worthy of a better book. If one wants a better book about the Guards then one should get their hands on a Copy of the "All the Queens Men" by Russell Braddon.
