Review

"Osprey Publishing's latest monograph ... focuses on the largest World War I battleships, the Dreadnoughts, and the epic 1916 clash between the Royal Navy's Grand Fleet and the Kaiser's High Seas Fleet. Author Stille (CDR USN ret.), makes the technical material understandable to the layman, and is ably assisted by the illustrators, whose drawings and maps clarify the ships' layouts and the battle tactics. An enjoyable and educational read, highly recommended." -Steve Zajac, "IPMS/USA "(November 2010)
"Author Mark Stille is known for his writings on naval subjects and brings that expertise to this book on the opposing ships and their performance at Jutland in 1916 ... In all, a superlative inclusion to this series." - Scott Van Aken, "Modeling Madness "(October 2010)
"These Osprey Duel Series books are very interesting, giving the reader an insight into how the Navies and their ships compared and why the results from various battles were obtained ... There have been many b

Product Description

In 1916, in the seas near Jutland, two fleets of armoured dreadnoughts met in open battle. This book tells the story of the British and German battleships of these two great fleets - from their development as the first generation of fully- armoured warships - to their combat experiences. The differing weapon systems and crew training of the British and German fleets are examined in detail, as is the titanic struggle of Jutland, through an hour-by-hour, shot-by-shot, reconstruction. Finally, it analyzes the outcome of the struggle, explaining the successes and failures of these great battleships.

A Fine Book 31 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is ideal for anyone interested in war at sea during the first world war,Jutland was a British victory just as Dunkirk was a German victory, both episodes mired in propaganda(a new documentry on tv still has Polish horse having a go at German tanks, this should have been put to bed long ago)light played a major role at this battle and whoever had the advantage of it inflicted damage on the other fleet.Admiral Jelicoe did cross the German T and badly served by the system used his instinct to achieve this, never getting the credit he should have had. The two fleets are well described in a very readable style, coverage of the battle is condensed but well written, artwork and photographs are very good,a fine book worth a place on any naval bookshelf.

This 80 page booklet is packed with information and pictures regarding the British and German World War 1 fleets.
It covers the warship designs, the resulting good and poorer features and the differing strategies with the British blockades and German attempts to break out and bombard the British east coastal towns. It considers the armaments and the personalities involved and looks at the events in the Battle of Jutland and analyses who could consider themselves the winners.
There are maps of the battle manoeuvres. I would have liked an explanation of the German T formation and a more detailed map of the German and Danish coastal areas (where was the Horns Reef for example?) but that does not detract from an enjoyable and very informative read.

i bought this in order to better learn about the battleship dreadnought, indeed this purchase is without doubt one of the most comprehensive and informative documentations, any body plannign to undertake a model build of this historic ship will be excellently served by this book,it is very detailed both in the schematics and photos.my only grumble is the price was a little steep, but once you open this book you soon forget that and enjoy reading its infromative pages.i recommend it to any dreadnought fan.
