Wonderfully focussed insight into British Art Deco Ceramics., 28 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: British Art Deco Ceramics (A Schiffer Book for Collectors) (Hardcover)
This wonderfully illustrated work gives a facinating insight into the 'British' perspective of Art Deco Ceramics. Many worldwide enthusiasts will be fascinated by the depth of inventive design genius that predominated in the 1920/30s decades in ceramics in the UK. Many obviously, quite rightly, believe that France led the way in the 'Moderne' styles and they were embraced in USA for the frivolity and depiction of the 'Jazz Age'. In Colin Mawston's book we see the hard work, industry & sheer dogged determination against establishment trends by Clarice Cliff & Susie Cooper with revealing personal insights. Notable names like Shelley, Barker Brothers, Burleigh, Carlton, Chameleon, Charlotte Rhead, Copes, Crown Devon, Doulton, Keith Murray, Myott, Poole, Sadler, Tams & Wedgwood are all skilfully covered and exhibited, presented like a pictorially informative museum gallery. Great work, when's the next book, Colin?
