Having recently written about Maurice Blower’s symphony…. here he is again…….. this time sharing the bill with three more composers. Two I admit were unknown to me, Frederick Kelly and William Gaze Cooper. The other though, Robin Milford, was much more familiar.

The Blower works centre on the French Horn; an “eclogue” or pastoral poem, and a concerto. The notes include a description, written by Thomas Blower (the composer’s son), of the first performance of the latter work at the 1953 Petersfield festival by no less than Dennis Brain, one of the greatest horn players this or any other country has ever produced.

He is reported as being very relaxed, performing the piece with “complete ease and confidence”. His comments on the concerto aren’t recorded but I feel sure he must have been delighted to add a new work to the repertoire. Certainly the present soloist, Jose Garcia Guttierrez, seems to play it with Brain’s relaxed assurance, and a full rounded tone. The sound is good too.

The Eclogue is a slighter work, unsurprisingly pastoral in feel, and it too is performed with accomplishment.

Listening to a presentation on CPE Bach the other evening, a colleague commented that in those days composers didn’t seem frightened of putting unusual instrumental combinations together into concertante music. Frederick Kelly offers a flute, harp and horn, and it works very well. Australian born but British by “adoption” Kelly sadly met his premature end at the Somme in November 1916….he was just 35.

Gaze Cooper meanwhile lived well into his eighties. A Derbyshire man he studies at the Royal Academy of Music becoming a lecturer in Nottingham College, and later forming the Midland Conservatoire there. 9 symphonies, 4 piano concertos, a violin concerto….

This is Volume 2 of a fascinating survey of British rarities. There is a lovely variety of wind concerti here. Maurice Blower's Eclogue for Horn and Strings and Horn Concerto, complete with wonderful description of Dennis Brain's first performance.
Robin Milford's Suite for Oboe and String Orchestra is British pastoral music at its best and you can certainly hear the influence of Vaughan Williams here.
The other wonderful oboe piece is Walter Gaze Cooper's Concertino for Oboe and Strings which is a great pleasure. Kelly's Serenade for Flute with accompaniment of harp, horn and string orchestra is extremely melodic. All the pieces here are a real pleasure to listen to, wonderful we can appreciate them with such beautiful performances, well recorded and fascinating booklet about these lesser known composers. Thoroughly recommended. I shall be looking forward to the further CDs in the series.
