Video Description

BRITISH MILITARY HERITAGE -
THE STORY OF THE GUARDS
The definitive archive film led history.
The Story Of The Guards (2009, 65 mins, directed by Ted
Fitzgerarld)
The Guards - Respected world wide on the parade ground and
equally feared on the battlefield, their discipline and training
prepares them for some of the toughest military encounters from
the Battle of Waterloo to Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
They're some of the most respected and highly disciplined soldiers
in the world, portraying all that is best about the British Army.
They are the personal bodyguard of the monarch, pivotal figures in
all aspects of the defence of the realm with Battle Honours and
ceremonies that read like a history of the British Isles.
Their origins go back to the bloody English Civil War and the
formation of democracy as we know it today.
With rare and much previously unseen archive footage, exclusive
interviews with the current Regimental Sergeant Major of the
Coldstream Guards, and unprecedented access to personal histories
and anecdotes, we explore how their traditions and reputation have
become part of the social fabric of Britain.
Follow their history, traditions, training and action as we tell the
definitive archive led story of 'The Guards' with nearly two hours of
unique footage from some of the leading military archive sources in
the world

This recent DVD (2010, principally colour) gives many illustrated informations on the Seven Guards : training, pageantry, military skills. By constantly moving from the pageantry aspects, associated with historical points, to the warfare aspects, it emphasize the duality of this units : parade, but also military efficiency. Naturally, the result (also, evidently, a point of departure) is : a very strong and magnificent esprit de corps. To notice : also commentaries and some interviews : sure, as a Frenchman, I miss some words : no subtitle option... but nothing boring. At first glance, not so moving as : British Military Traditions in the News, but a DVD to be seen again, and, I suppose, again !

Being an ex Guardsman myself, the is a pretty accurate view of what life is like within the Foot Guards from the Household Division. The five Regiments of Foot Guards are: Grenadiers, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh, then there are the two Regiments of the Household Cavalry, The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals
