Book Description

22 Nov 2012
'Vintage' caravans have quite recently begun to attract much wider attention than they had previously enjoyed. Those that haven't collapsed in a forgotten heap long ago are being dragged out of hedges and barns and restored by enthusiasts to their full period glory. This book presents details of caravan manufacturers in Britain who started up before World War II. About half of them had ceased trading by 1939 and a number of others did not return to production after the War. All of them, 117 manufacturers from ABC to Yorkshire, and their products are included in these pages. Accompanying the text are more than 300 illustrations, a pleasing mixture of archive photographs with reproductions from manufacturers' advertising and publicity material, including some splendid period artwork. Published in association with The Caravan Club.

About the Author

Roger Ellesmere is a retired quantity surveyor. He remembers being taken by his parents in the mid-1950s to visit friends holidaying in a caravan at Ulrome on the East Yorkshire coast. Once inside, he was hooked, and caravans have been an abiding interest ever since.Later, he decided that as detailed a record as possible should be made of the mostly small and largely forgotten firms who have engaged in caravan manufacture in Britain. He was deterred from making a start due to the time commitment that would be required, but a spell of unemployment in 1996 provided the incentive to begin -- initially on a single work but subsequently split into two parts to enable the publication of this book, Volume One. His original estimate of the time commitiment was a grow under-estimate! Roger has been a Caravan Club member for more than 20 years.

A great book that you will not want to put down, i bought it to find more about my early Rice folding caravan i had just bought, and there it was. I can not wait for the post war version, to see what i can find out about my other old caravans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb reference work 26 Mar 2013

A great feat of research, that will become the definitive reference source for pre-war caravans. Some great photographs of really rare caravans from almost unknown manufacturers and a series of one-make histories for the more successful caravan makers.
Now vintage and classic caravan enthusiasts are waiting for the post-war sequel. - Brian Miller [...]

3.0 out of 5 stars history book with some short comings 26 Sep 2013
By ace
I found this book quite interesting - some makes I wasn't sure of but also I can not understand why it wondered post war into the sixties even - that should be saved for next volume. Also there were one or two names missing and most pictures were directly from the 30's issues of Caravan magazine. Other pictures featured had also been seen before in Whitman History of Caravan Book from 1973. Some errors too crept in such ss Ensor finishing in 1972 in the book but in fact they finished in 1974.Also that Stirling Caravans put Cheltenham caravans back into production, but this never happened only a Fawn prototype model was built. Man behind the idea Eric Gilman died so Stephens and west just sold off to Kent dealership. So could have been better after 10 years of research big shame - but since no other book has tracked this in this format then its fine for most. So to sum up it would have been good to see pictures not published anywhere else, plus doing a book of this nature is very difficult as there will always be room for errors. Also it should have kept at pre war and not wandered off into other decades.
