Product Description

Product Description

Henry Conn's interest in British buses, trams and trolleybuses began in the late 1950s in his native Aberdeen, and since then, armed with a variety of cameras and notebooks, he has travelled the length and breadth of the country photographing and recording the public transport scene. The first volume in this new regional series captures the vehicles of a wide variety of municipal and independent operators in their working environment from the 1950s to the mid-1970s. Many show the vehicles in pre-National Bus Company and Passenger Transport Executive liveries. A brief history of each company is followed by carefully selected photographs, the majority in colour and never before published, with informative captions describing not only the bus or trolleybus, but also other nostalgic details of the general street scene. The Midlands volume features the following operators: Barton Transport, Birmingham City, Burton upon Trent Corporation, Chesterfield Corporation, City of Oxford, Coventry Corporation, Derby Corporation, East Midland Motor Services, W. Gash & Sons, Leicester City Transport, Luton Corporation, Mansfield District Traction Company, Midland General Omnibus Co Ltd, Midland Red, Northampton Corporation, Nottingham City Transport, Nottingham & Derbyshire Traction Co, Potteries Motor Traction Company Ltd, South Notts, Stratford upon Avon Blue Motors Ltd, Trent Motor Traction Co Ltd, United Counties Omnibus Co Ltd, Walsall Corporation, West Bridgeford Urban District Transport, West Bromwich Transport Department, and Wolverhampton Corporation.

About the Author

After a career in the Civil Service and farming, Henry Conn returned to full-time education to gain an Honours Degree in Agriculture in 1996. He has subsequently rejoined the Civil Service and now works for Natural England as an adviser to land managers on environmental schemes and a specialist in upland farming systems. He lives in Dumfries & Galloway.

An excellent book 14 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
What a treasure this book is.I guarantee that any bus enthusiast living in the Midlands or an ex-patriate like myself, will find something to identify with. For me, the photographs taken in Acocks Green, Birmingham bring back many memories. The photographs are of very high quality, mostly in colour. The captions are most informative.Full details of the buses concerned are given, and information about the cars and other transport shown. There is even background information concerning the advertisements carried on the buses. The range of bus types shown, is such that even areas unfamiliar become interesting. The section on Walsall trolleybuses is outstanding. The only minor disappointment is the lack of detail concerning the locations of the photographs. However readers will be able to identify some themselves.I urge enthusiasts to buy 2 copies of this book as they will probably wear one out!

Full of nostalgia 31 May 2010
Format:Paperback
The best way to buy a book such as this is to have your significant other buy it as a present, that way,
When you are immersed in the nostalgia of the period for hours you are not ignoring her, you are merely appreciating the gift.
That then, is how I acquired Henry Conn's excellent `British Buses and Trolleybuses 1950s - 1970s: part 1
The Midlands'
The author, a lifelong enthusiast of the public transport scene has captured a unique piece of our history
And has presented this, together with his extensive knowledge on the subject in a well laid out and easy to read book, In doing so he has provided a wide representation of the vehicles in the area, mixing nostalgia with fact and providing not only information on buses, but also details of other vehicles, advertisements and street scenes in a very entertaining and informative manner.
Not just a bus enthusiast's book but also for those interested in nostalgia and the history of this area.
With part two: `South Wales and the South West' due for publication in November I look forward to a
Few hours on Christmas day appreciating another gift, as a good husband should.

Not a bad book. but a few mistakes.the 3rd page it said WEST MON changed the colours in 1974 .it was in 1969 they changed to blue after the suppliers told them that the contract was ending with them over paint supplys.November 1969 number 13 was painted. then page 99 it is mentioned in the caption that a ford anglia is seen. no sign off the car.also WESTERN WELSH. one of the big operators . there are only 3 photos and one off them is an ex bus. no double deckers are shown from their fleet. no HILLS TREDEGAR or EDMUNDS RASSAU. are in the book . 2 bus operators in the gwent valleys.
