Synopsis

Once again, the British Army Pocket Guide 2005-2006 will be a comprehensive guide to the organisation, equipment and tactics of today's British Army. This latest edition will incorporate the detail of all of the December 2004 army reorganisation and regimental amalgamations plus details of major systems and equipment introduced in the past five years. A new chapter will provide an account of British Army operations in the 2003 Gulf War and the subsequent military operations in support of coalition operations in Iraq. Other new items will detail Defence Medical Services and the future 'Intelligent Battlefield'. This will be the 9th Edition of the British Army Pocket Guide, a publication that first appeared in 1984, and a publication that has become the accepted reference source on the British Army for the UK and foreign military, the world media and interested civilians.

I am applying to join the army and wanted a book to give me alot of the information that I will be expected to know at interview, including a general background, details of current deployments and the different sections/corps of the army.

This book has 14 chapters, one on an overview of the army, one on army organisations, one on international commitments, (including Iraq,) 8 chapters on the different sections (Infantry, Communications etc.)There is a chapter on recruitment and selection, another on the reserve forces and a final miscellaneous chapter - this includes details of pay/rank, and a list of abbreviations used, eg: fmm - formation etc.

All in all, this is a good book to give you a round up of the army, but not specifics on things. It is a small book, so to fit everything in the font is quite small, (probably about pt 8.)There are not many diagrams, just a small b & w picture for each type of tank and aircraft (but not very good quality.)

For the price and size of this, I would say that overall it is a good book.
