Misleading title 14 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent introductory guide to the period 1485 - 1939, full of illustrations in which the various features of buildings are clearly labelled. This will help the beginner to acquire an understanding of the basics and a good vocabulary of terms in architecture and design. However, the title is misleading in that the book is purely about houses -and then mainly stately homes and town/city houses. Those hoping to learn about churches and cathedrals, rural, industrial or civic buildings will be disappointed

Dating buildings 28 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
I have always found old buildings fascinating and wanted to know how to date them and their extensions. British Architectural Styles proved an easy reference guide, helping me to date the wide variety of building we see around us. It covers the immense range of architectural styles from 1500 to 1950, complete with a glossary of architectural terms and a historical time chart. Each chapter covers a distinct period with a background to the social and economic history and details of the styles of architecture in fashion at the time. The result is an invaluable companion when visiting villages or stately homes, or for those who are renovating, tracing the history of their own home.

A Great Little Book! 17 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Bought this book to help us house hunting in West London and it was extremely useful. We used it to quickly and easily identify the period of the houses we were viewing and now are using it as a springboard to think about how to decorate (there is basic info on doors, fireplaces etc).

Good illustrations and it's all written in good, clear English.

It's a bargain.
