One out of four car accidents is a side collision and side collisions account for 20% of child fatalities, so it is vital to provide side protection for your child even as they get older. Side Impact Cushion Technology (SICT) are air-filled, energy management cushions that reduce side impact crash energy by over 25% for the child in the seat (according to internal Britax testing 2010). They do not deploy like airbags and are maintenance free.

During a side collision, the cushions compress to absorb the incoming crash forces and safely expel the air through strategically placed vents. This means that side impact crash forces are absorbed before they reach your child, resulting in fewer head injuries. The energy-absorbing surface area along the full length of the seat protects your child's head, neck, and torso.

The Kid SICT will take up more space than a standard car seat without this protection. Check the measurements (61cm wide) if you have a smaller car and need to install two cars seats to make sure you have enough room. Why buy a Group 2-3 car seat?

A Group 2-3 car seat is designed for children weighing between 15 and 35kg (approximately 4 to 12 years old, but it is the weight that decides which seat you need).

Since April 2008, the Highway Code has specified that each child who is less than 1.35 meters or younger than 12 must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system which has been successfully tested according to ECE 44/03 or 44/04 standards. When should you move your child up to using a Group 2-3 car?

For safety reasons, you should keep your child in each stage for as long as possible -– until they reach the weight limit or their head reaches the top of the seat. Move from a Group 1 seat when the upper edge of the shell is roughly at eye level of the child or your child exceeds the weight limit. Do not move too early to a Group 2-3 because these seats are wider to accommodate larger children. Also a younger child's shoulders are too narrow to hold to the safety belt securely. A small child can therefore easily slip out from under the belt, especially when they fall asleep during the journey.

The Kid SICT is fitted with softly padded covers, designed for comfort, practicality and style. The Billy cover is black with a subtle grey circle print and is made from soft-touch fabric for extra comfort. The cover is easy to clean, being removable and machine washable.

Spare covers are available separately for the Kid SICT, which you can use when the original is being washed or just to give the seat a new look. For car journeys in hotter weather, you may also want a Summer Cover or a Keep Cool Cover.
