The Kid plus SICT car seat offers a safe and comfortable journey for your child, adjusting as they get older
One out of four car accidents is a side collision and side collisions account for 20% of child fatalities, so it is vital to provide side protection for your child even as they get older. Side Impact Cushion Technology (SICT) are air-filled, energy management cushions that reduce side impact crash energy by over 25% for the child in the seat (according to internal Britax testing 2010). They do not deploy like airbags and are maintenance free.
During a side collision, the cushions compress to absorb the incoming crash forces and safely expel the air through strategically placed vents. This means that side impact crash forces are absorbed before they reach your child, resulting in fewer head injuries. The energy-absorbing surface area along the full length of the seat protects your child's head, neck, and torso.
The Kid plus SICT will take up more space than a standard car seat without this protection. Check the measurements (61 cm wide) if you have a smaller car and need to install two cars seats to make sure you have enough room. However it is fine to use with other passengers in the car--in fact the adjacent passengers would also benefit from a soft, protective surface in a side collision.
The Kid plus has three adjustable width positions with the seat area growing to accommodate your child as they grow. The height of the headrest can also be adjusted to 11 positions.
The Kid plus SICT car seat does not have an integral harness; your child secured using the car’s three-point seat belt. Children can be injured if the seat belt is not correctly positioned across their body, so the Kid plus SICT has seat belt guides to correctly position the seat belt over your child’s shoulder and pelvis, away from the vulnerable neck and stomach areas.
If this car seat does not have all the features you want, why not look at the Britax Car Seat Buying Guide to see which of their other car seats might be more suitable.
A Group 2-3 car seat is designed for children weighing between 15 and 35 kg (approximately 4 to 12 years old, but it is the weight that decides which seat you need).
Since April 2008, the Highway Code has specified that each child who is less than 1.35 meters or younger than 12 must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system which has been successfully tested according to ECE 44/03 or 44/04 standards. A child car seat gives the child a higher sitting position, ensuring the adult seat belt can be positioned correctly across their body.
Booster cushions are better than nothing, but they offer no side impact protection, which is vital as side collisions account for 20% of fatalities. Britax has stopped selling its booster cushions and are instead recommending high-backed car seats. The Kid plus offers this essential side impact protection for your older child with optimal head protection and body containment. This seat exceeds the current safety requirements.
For safety reasons, you should keep your child in each stage for as long as possible -– until they reach the weight limit or their head reaches the top of the seat. Move from a Group 1 seat when the upper edge of the shell is roughly at eye level of the child or your child exceeds the weight limit. Do not move too early to a Group 2-3 because these seats are wider to accommodate larger children. Also a younger child's shoulders are too narrow to hold to the safety belt securely. A small child can therefore easily slip out from under the belt, especially when they fall asleep during the journey.
The Kid plus SICT is fitted with softly padded covers, designed for comfort, practicality and style. The 2012 Kid plus SICT is available in a choice of five Trend Line fabric covers and one High Line cover. Part of the Trend Line range, the Max cover is a classic black--the most popular choice for car seats. The cover is easy to clean, being removable and machine washable.
Spare covers are available separately for the Kid plus SICT, which you can use when the original is being washed or just to give the seat a new look. For car journeys in hotter weather, you may also want a Summer Cover or a Keep Cool Cover.
