The Britax Duo Plus is a forward-facing infant car seat that provides a safe and comfortable experience whichever way it is installed. The seat is suited for children weighing between 9 and 18 kg.
When you install the Duo Plus with your car's Isofix system, you can also add a top tether to make the seat extra stable. The top tether is a belt at the top of the car seat that attaches to anchorage points in the car. It limits the rotational movement of the child seat, reducing the child's forward movement in the event of an accident. The top tether kit for the Duo Plus is sold separately.
If you have two cars and one of them doesn't have an Isofix system, then the Duo Plus is the ideal solution as it can also be installed with the car's three-point seatbelt. This flexibility means it is suitable for use in a wide range of cars, and ideal for moving between different vehicles.
Isofix is an internationally-recognised way of fixing a child car seat to a vehicle without using a seatbelt. As of February 2011, it is required by law that the system be integrated into a minimum number of seats in all new cars. Isofix anchorage points are installed in the vehicle with matching connectors on the child safety seats, allowing seats to be securely, correctly, and permanently attached to the vehicle body. Its simple installation minimises the risk of the car seat being installed incorrectly.
In the event of an accident, the pivot link system reduces much of the forward rotation of the seat, which channels a large part of the energy downwards into the car seat. This means that in the first phase of a collision, the movement of the child that is directed forward is markedly absorbed and reduced by means of the seat being initially pressed into the car seat. In the second phase, the forward movement of the seat is slowed down. This causes the pivot link to reduce the strain placed on the child's body, in particular the cervical spine. This reduces the risk of head injury through, for example, collision with the front seat.
Side collisions account for one out of four car accidents and 20% of child car crash fatalities, so all Britax car seats provide side impact protection. The deeply padded side wings of the Duo Plus offer optimum body protection and full head containment. During sleep and rest, they support your child from the sides and help keep your child in the correct position. In the event of a side collision, the side wings absorb the crash energy, reducing the impact on your child.
Britax advocates children remaining in a properly positioned five-point harness for as long as possible. The Duo Plus has an integral harness for use with smaller children with five attachment points – two at the shoulder, two at the hips, and one between the legs – ensuring your child remains securely in the seat. The harness can be adjusted with one pull.
Single-group car seats have the optimum shape designed for the weight of the child. They also offer additional comfort and practicality. Group 1 seats have comfortable recline systems that are easy to adjust while the child is in the seat, and the seat is fitted to the car. Group 1 car seats are suitable for children weighing between 9 and 18 kg (approximately 9 months to 4 years old). You should move from a Group 0+ to a Group 1 seat when your child exceeds the weight limit and can sit up unaided with confidence, or if their head is higher than the top of the infant carrier.
The Duo Plus is fitted with softly-padded covers designed for comfort, practicality, and style. The car seat is available in a choice of covers, all of which are made from soft-touch fabric for extra comfort, and they are removable and machine washable which makes them easy to clean.
Spare covers are available separately for the Duo Plus, which you can use while the original is being washed or just to give the seat a new look. For car journeys in hotter weather, you may also want a Summer Cover or a Keep Cool Cover.
When you buy a Britax car seat, you can be reassured that you are benefitting from over 40 years of experience and innovation in child safety. Britax's products are tested to the highest standards, and it is one of very few brands to own in-house crash-test systems – the kind used in the automotive industry – ensuring it provides optimum protection and safety for children.
Beyond this, Britax listens to its customers and feeds their experiences into future product developments, so that their car seats and travel systems meet real-life needs.
