Flexible and safe travel with the Britax B-Smart

The Britax B-Smart Pushchair is a versatile pushchair with a removable seat unit. It features Britax's Click and Go travel system which enables you to create your ideal travel system around the B-Smart chassis. The lightweight construction, compact folding mechanism and removable wheels enable the B-Smart to be stored and carried easily when not in use. The soft suspension, adjustable handle, push brake and locking wheels make it easy to use, while your baby travels in comfort.

B-Smart with Baby-Safe infant carrier
Combine the B-Smart with a Britax Baby-Safe infant carrier to move between the car and pushchair without disturbing your baby

Rearward and forward facing

It is important for younger babies to have eye contact with their parent, which is why Britax has designed a removable seat that can be used rearward facing with your child looking towards you and then converts to forward facing when your child is older. The seat also features multiple recline positions, so you can adjust your baby’s viewing and seating position so they are happy and comfortable. The recline options includes a lay flat position which is recommended for babies in their first few months as it allows their spine and respiratory system to develop properly.

Create your ideal travel system

The B-Smart is supplied with a removable seat, but it can also be combined with other Britax products to create a flexible travel system to fit with your baby’s needs. If you frequently travel by car, combining the B-Smart with a Britax Baby-Safe infant carrier allows you to move your baby from the pushchair to the car without disturbing them or compromising their in-car safety. If you are going to spend a lot of time travelling and your baby is going to sleep in the pushchair, then a Baby-Safe Sleeper or carrycot are recommended, particularly for newborns who need to be kept lying flat. These all attached to the pushchair chassis using the one-step Click and Go system for easy installation.

Sporty three wheel option

B-Smart 3 the modern three-wheel version of the B-Smart (a four wheel model is also available). Three wheels handle uneven surfaces better than the traditional four wheel pushchairs as there are less points of contact with the ground, reducing the “up and over” to make the ride smoother. The wheels are puncture resistant, so you don’t have to worry about getting a flat when out for a long walk. The wheels lock and swivel for maximum manoeuvrability over bumpy surfaces and round tight corners. These features make the B-Smart 3 ideal for use in the countryside or in towns where the pavements are uneven.

Cosytoes to keep your baby snug and warm
Cosytoes (available separately) keeps your baby snug and warm while out in the B-Smart

Little details to make life easier

The B-Smart seat is fitted with an extendable shower-proof hood with mesh panel to protect your little one from the elements. A raincover to protect from heavier rain and wind is also included with this model of the B-Smart, but you may also want to buy a Britax cosytoes to ensure your baby is kept snug and warm. The B-Smart chassis has a spacious basket, so you can bring home your shopping easily and the Britax changing bag (available separately) fits neatly in here too.

I did A LOT of research on pushchairs before buying this as a replacement for the Mamas and Papas Luna which isn't the best.

The B-Smart 3 is good and I'm pleased with it BUT a few words of warning...

    1) I had two of these from Amazon as the first didn't have the detachable apron which is listed in the inventory - the second came along and it didn't have it either. I contacted Amazon Customer Service but couldn't get an answer as to whether it was listed incorrectly in the inventory or whether this was a dodgy batch which didn't have it in the box. You can't buy it seperately - BUT looking elsewhere at places that sell this model (the 2011 model), the detachable apron isn't listed in the inventory. Still not sure if it should be there or not but Amazon said they're looking in to it. The cosytoes does the job anyway so you wouldn't necessarily need the apron.

    2) The inventory doesn't state that this comes with a raincover but it does - so don't order a seperate raincover like I did as you'll be stuck with the hassle of returning it to Amazon

    3) Although it's good to steer and light to steer as well, it's actually pretty heavy to get up kerbs, so beware!

    4) As it's a 3-wheeler, there's a certain knack to manoevering it up and down kerbs without 'tilting' it so just beware if you're used to 4-wheelers that it's very different to handle. I think this is the same for all 3-wheelers and not specific to this make and model so isn't a problem, just may not be something you expect.

Anyway, enough from me! Baby seems to like it and very easy to lie seat flat and tilt with baby in it!

    DECEMBER 2011:
Baby is now almost one and just wanted to add an update. I found the straps were actualy really short (as other people have noted) and when I put the cosytoes on now it's cold, the straps wouldn't go over little one's shoulders. I contacted Britax and they advised that it is a common problem and they sent me free strap extensions. Not perfect to be honest as they adjust and slide too easily and can disconnect from the original straps quite easily, but do the trick.

I've also had a problem with one of the wheels 'sticking' when I take the brake off - it takes a bit of wiggling the pushchair about to get it moving again. Have mentioned this to Britax and they said they'd call me back. Also, one of the buttons you press in on the handle to adjust the handle height keeps on popping out - don't want to lose it as wouldn't be able to adjust the handle height then!!

Also, I have just put the hood extenders on as little one's head was approaching the hood(!) and they do raise the hood effectively BUT a word of warning: the hood when fully pulled over no longer goes as far over little one and also, there's a gap then between the top of the seat and the hood when the hood's down, which looks a bit odd. I think this could be a bit problematic when putting the rain cover over as it's unlikely to fit as well.

For these reasons, I've changed my rating from 4 stars to 3. Sorry Britax - great pushchair for a tiny one, but needed a bit more planning for when they start growing up.

    Versatile indeed. 28 Dec 2011
    By mylexie
You can do anything you want with this pushchair. It folds down easily, and out just as easily. You can put the chair part to face you, or out, depending on what your child needs (as a young baby they like to see you, when they get older they want to see what you're seeing). It's fairly light and easy to handle. If you've got a (Roemer) Britax car seat (Baby Safe Plus I or II), you can use the undercarriage to make it into a temporary push chair, though you do need the adaptors. All in all, a very good pushchair at a reasonable price.

The downsides: Because it has only one wheel in front, it can feel a little unstable at times (though it makes manoeuvring easier). The baggage part is a little small (mostly because there are no sides to it, so things slide off if you put them on top of each other), and the roof doesn't always cover enough.

    Be Aware! 19 Feb 2011
    By GMW
Fantastic whilst it was usable! Build quality, ease of use and functionality are very good. I have only rated the Britax B-Smart 3 1 star, as you cannot use it as a pushchair after 9-10 months, as the straps are too short and there is no more adjustment! The B-Smart is meant to be designed to cope with kids up to 15kg, but my son is 10kg and 10 months old. Britax offer an adjustable clip on harness as a 'workaround' and are working on a more permanent solution. This for us was not acceptable for the money we paid and have since had a full refund. BE AWARE!
The front wheel can be locked in the straight ahead position or unlocked to make manoeuvring easier. BE AWARE that going off pavements or uneven ground, when unlocked the wheel tends to go right angles to the direction that you are travelling in and when it touches the ground again, it stops you dead and if you are not aware of this you can tip the B-Smart over, child and all!
