Product Description

Product Description

This book, covering the final years of steam on Britain's railways, presents a wonderful array of over 200 colour photographs, many of them previously unpublished. All the imagery is reproduced from original transparencies that have remained carefully preserved away from daylight since the day they were taken, so the original vividness of colour remains - a rare quality. As high-quality colour photography from this period is scarce (most photographers worked mainly in black and white to serve the needs of publishers), this book will delight today's railway enthusiasts, who are always keen to see new material unearthed and published.

About the Author

Colin Maggs MBE is a retired teacher and long-time railway enthusiast with several dozen books to his name, mainly on railway topics of the south-west. He lives in Bath.

Britain's Railways?? 26 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
Britain's railways? - er, England and Wales actually. Scotland's meagre representation is two photos of the same station (Fort William) on the last page. That apart, this is an excellent collection of colour photos from the last days of steam on BR concentrating mainly on the South of England. Not simply focussing on the locomotives, this shows how beautiful railway scenery can be.

This is a high quality book with some superb colour pictures of the heyday of steam in Britain.
Some of the pictures are so clear and bright that you'd think they had been taken yesterday, however there are a few that aren't so clear or the colour not as sharp but these only really serve as a reminder that these pictures are all over 40 years old.
Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the railways of a by-gone age.

Very Nice Book 11 April 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a well presented book with some really intersting colour photos which are very useful to any steam age railway modeller like myself, especially if you are looking to accurately weather model loco's and are looking for any railway oddities that could add interest to your layout. Yes, like a previous reviewer said, some photo's are not as chrystal sharp as todays digital images, but still very viewable. We must remember that when most of these pictures were originally taken (over 50 years ago), colour transparency film was in its infancy and film speeds were very low indeed. I think it all adds to the atmosphere and nostalgia of that lost age. Very good price too.
