Product Description

This is one of a brand-new series of stunning 40-track 2-CD sets comprising a collection of original artists Top 10 hits from each year from 1953, the first complete year after the UK record sales chart was launched in November 1952, through to 1962 a decade which saw the most momentous developments in the history of popular music, as rock n roll emerged in the aftermath of post-war depression and the mushrooming of mass media. This collection for 1954 includes many major US hits which repeated their success in the UK, along with cover versions of other US hits by British artists, plus many home-grown hits by artists who were often big stars on radio and TV. For those who were around at the time it will provide a non-stop stream of evocative memories, and its a must for enthusiasts and collectors of 50s nostalgia.

This is the second in a series that covers UK top ten hits from 1953, the first full year of British record sales charts. They started in November 1952, before which there had been sheet music charts. There is a more comprehensive collections - see 1954 British Hit Parade: Britain's Greatest Hits, Vol. 3 but this will do for me. All the tracks are presented in the order in which they charted, ending with Mambo Italiano (Rosemary Clooney), which charted in December 1954. (Rosemary had two UK #1 hits in 1954, the earlier one being the much more famous This ole house, which was also a UK top 5 hit for Billie Anthony. As that was Billie's greatest hit and as each artist is only represented once in each volume except 1953, Rosemary's version of This ole house is not here, but you'll find it in the 4CD box linked above.) While every track here made the top 10, many of them made #1 and most of the others made the top 5.

Actually, Rosemary Clooney sings backup on another track here, Woman uh huh (Jose Ferrer), which I must have heard before but perhaps not at an age when I could really understand the significance of the lyrics. Now I can, and having heard Rosemary's quip at the end, I need to identify the B-side and listen to that, but I have other priorities just now.

1954 was an interesting year, although rock'n'roll was still unheard of at that stage. Of course I'm very familiar with the vast majority of the tracks here, especially as there are plenty of classic songs including Secret love(Doris Day), Such a night (Johnny Ray) and Little things mean a lot (Kitty Kallen) to name a few. Though not often heard these days, I was pleased to find Tennessee wig walk (Bonnie Lou) and Someone else's roses (Joan Regan) here too.

This is an outstanding collection, showcasing the best that 1954 had to offer.

Bought it for my Gran and Grandads Diamond Anniversary, they loved it. It had the number one song on from when they got married. They really loved reminiscing over all the songs from this year, it took them back to happy times. It arrived safely and prompt.
