Book Description

4 Nov 2004
This sumptuously illustrated guide is a magnificent celebration of the museums of the British Isles and their contents, revealing a treasure trove of riches and a unique record of the nation's life and history. Britain has many of the world's best museums and galleries, great and small. Mark Fisher has travelled across Britain, from the West of Ireland to East Anglia, from the Orkneys to St. Ives, to select the best 350: famous and little-known, international and local; collections of fashion; flying machines and fans; ceramics and motorcars; boots, shoes and lasts; great works of art. Richly illustrated and packed with stories about the remarkable men and women who have created, donated and cared for these collections, this is an essential companion for all who love museums, showing the familiar in a new light and introducing readers to many hidden delights they never knew existed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant work 19 Nov 2008
By Chris
Format:Paperback
I seriously think this is the sort of book that virutally anyone would benefit from - whether it be the serious museum visitor, or the sort of person who likes but doesn't really understand, to the family outing on a cold wet day. It really is quite excellent, with just enough for each one, without feeling you are being overloaded with infomation. It loses a star for me on 2 accounts. One is not including a map of the whole country at the start. It is easy to know where Scotland or Wales is, but when England is divided into areas, such as West Midlands and East Midlands you do have to spend a bit of time going through each section to find the place you want. Also at several points the writer states that he is saddened at omitting a place but doesn't always state why that place is being omitted.

3.0 out of 5 stars Britain's Best Museums and Galleries 9 Feb 2011
By Simon
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book in terms of the number of institutions it covers, and the depth that it goes into, but I couldn't really cope with the authors rating system for each museum or gallery. (***** Collections of International Reputation and Significance / **** The Best National Collections / *** Collections of National Importance / ** The Best in the Region / * Good Collections and well worth a Detour.) First of all, why the author chose to rate each institution is beyond me. In the sense that one can clearly tell that the author has a biased point of view on the history of art, and favors traditional art over todays much more philosophical art because the institutions in the book such as Tate Modern are rated quite low in comparison to institutions like the National Gallery. If like me you appreciate art from all periods equally (unlike the author) this book could be a bit of a tern off.
