Product Description

Product Description

This is the second book in Guy-Halford Macleod's three-volume series on Britain's airlines. The series hopes to redress the balance in considering particularly the independent airlines, the first truly low-cost airlines which have left an indelible mark on the industry, fashioning the template of low costs, targeted marketing, differential prices and cheap fares. Volume 1 covered the shortest time-scale in the series, 1946-51. It looks at plans for Nationalisation in WW2, post-war aviation policy, and the business opportunities of the era. This volume looks at early post-war developments under Labour (nationalisation and private airlines); restrictions under the subsequent Tory govt; charter airlines under the Tories (Dan Air, Freddie Laker), Suez Crisis; Macmillan era, focus on manufacturing; amalgamations from 1960 Civil Aviation Act and Air Transport Licensing Board, giving way to licensing battles, disappointments, setbacks and new beginning as by 1964 Tory rule again came to an end.

This book is a total goldmine of information on a real golden age of air travel.
It shows that budget travel was operating at a time decades before the likes of Easyjet and Ryan air.

Well researched but (because it has only a handful of good quality colour photos), I will only award 4 stars. The B/W photos are of marginal quality, so this is no picture book, but it is a fascinating documentary account of the 1950s airline industry.

No student of British aviation should be without this, or the Vol 1 by the same author.

I'll keep this short as my view on this second volume is much the same as it was on the first. Halford MacLeod has once again produced an authoritative history of the British airline industry, this time up to 1964 by which time the state-owned airlines were beginning to lose their protected status. The emergence of characters such as Freddie Laker and Harold Bamberg who dared to challenge the political masters of BOAC and BEA made for an interesting period for British commercial aviation and the book tells the story well. In Volume 1 Halford MacLeod was guilty of going too far into the process of awarding of trooping contracts which meant one of the chapters was a bit dull. No such problem with this volume - it is a great read for anyone with an interest in the so called golden age of commercial flying. Roll on Volume 3!

Well written and engrossing. I travelled out to North Africa on an Elizabethean in the 1950s so it was interesting to see how the planes progressed and the airlines changed.Lots of good photographs.
