Betjeman's poems capture the quintessential elements of English life either side of WW2. The accompanying music of Jim Parker, with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra is a magical and hugely appropriate support to Betjeman's own voice on this wonderfully evocative CD. See also 'Late Flowering Love', and 'Banana Blush'; Betjeman's voice gives us an honest and amusing take on English habits and human relations. (Note: some of the words are not perhaps for those with a nervous disposition!) Parker's music appeals and complements all three of these excellent, high-quality CDs.

I also purchased Betjeman's Banana Blush CD at the same time. My original cassette tapes were I thought after many years sounding worn. I decided to upgrade my Betjemen to CDs. The content of course was fine but I found the audio quality, balance and mix for a CD disappointing. I suspect that the technical quality and productions values of the original recordings of some 30 years ago were probably not all they could have been. However worth the money to future proof some valued works.

In the 1970s, Sir John Betjeman recorded four albums, all containing readings of his poems set to music. 'Banana Blush' is the jewel in the crown, but this, along with 'Late Flowering Love'' is a worthy second. The recordings are charming and Betjeman's voice is a delight. Jim Parker's accompanying music has been knocked by some reviewers but it was applauded when this came out. I personally believe it adds to the atmosphere of the recordings, which are geniunely a joy to listen to.

I have known this recording for many years, having possessed the original records. The Jim Parker music is superb and a perfect complement to Betjeman's words. It brings alive famous poems - and remember this was the great man himself speaking and thereby approving of the whole concept of adding a musical background to his poetry. Little phrases stick in the mind and are so typical of Betjeman: Miss J Hunter Dunn, Furnished and burnished by Aldershot sun.....When melancholy autumn comes to Wembley and electric trains are lighted after tea... who else could ever have written those?

AS I SAY IN MY HEADING, I AM DELIGHTED TO HAVE THIS CD. I LOVE JOHN BETJEMAN'S CLEVER POETRY, AND ACCOMPANIED BY JIM PARKER'S SUPERB MUSIC MAKES IT JUST PERFECT. I BORROWED THE LP LONG AGO FROM THE LIBRARY, BUT WAS VERY SURPRISED TO FIND IT STILL EXISTS. I HAVE NOW ADDED IT TO MY MUSIC COLLECTION ON MY LAPTOP & CAN PLAY IT WHENEVER I WISH. THANKYOU VERY MUCH.
