Six Thousand Years of British History and Heritage

Take a fascinating helicopter flight across Britain to see 6,000 years of history, heritage and architecture. This entirely aerial perspective traces the nations development from prehistoric times, through the arrival of the Romans, the Norman Conquest and the medieval age, right up to the present day. Narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi.

This programme is very well done. Beautifully filmed, well written, and with Derek Jacobi as narrator you can't go wrong. It is divided into 7 half-hour chapters which makes for more manageable viewing considering how info-packed it is. The information is presented chronologically, not geographically. In other words, it starts with pre-history and progresses through modern times, jumping around geographically depending on the information that's being imparted. (Some other "from the air" programmes focus on the history of one geographical location before moving on to the next one.)

My only complaint is they don't show the locations they're talking about on a map. They may mention the town and/or county (and occasionally say something like "up north"), but it would have been much more helpful to illustrate it with a quick flash of a map to put it in geographical context.

That said, I have no other issues with the content of the programme itself. It is both entertaining and educational -- the best of both worlds!

One small issue I have is with the packaging. Along with listing each chapter (which I will include here as Amazon has neglected to do so in their product description), it states there's a "making-of" documentary -- however none exists on the disc itself.

1. The Romans in Britain
2. Medieval Realms
3. The Tudors
4. And Age of Elegance
5. The Industrial Revolution
6. The Victorians
7. A New Age

A more appropriate title for this DVD would be The History of Britain from the Air. Enjoyed what we have watched so far.

This DVD is excellent. The photography was very good and the content entertaining as well as informative. Britain is a beautiful country and has an intriguing history. This DVD covered the most important phases that I wanted to know. I am a South African of British heritage and am greatly interested in British culture - finding one's roots is what it is called!
