Product Description

Review

TES review of the first edition (Britain 1815-1918): Put out more flags Hard-pressed heads of History with budgets to manage must have been waiting impatiently for years for someone to reinvent the one-volume textbook at a reasonable price. Collins have done it.

Product Description

This volume is a comprehensive AS and A Level history text on 19th-century and early 20th-century Britain, written by a team of experienced teachers who are also examiners. Topics covered include the Great Reform Act of 1832; British foreign policy in the Age of Palmerston; economic and social history; and Britain and the origins of the World War I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives a good view of history through the Victorian period, 15 May 2007
By Mist of Time "Mist of Time" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I bought this having browsed dozens of books and found it was pitched well, didn't patronise, didn't have too much content on one particular topic, and had a range of overlapping themes e.g. Ireland, social change, particular individuals, foreign policy and so forth.

I wanted a guide to the changes that happened during the period of the nineteenth century as a backdrop to studying my family tree - I wasn't disappointed.

I was also very interested to find out how much of today's world is rooted in these times, and also how many things that were big changes then (extending the vote, education...) seem obvious in hindsight.

Well recommended and not just for students
