3.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic 5 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
There are lots of good ideas in this collection, there are a few amazingly good stories as well (including the First Prize winner), and one or two stories are so poor I am actually astonished that they ever made it to the shortlist.

Overall, however, it is too obvious that these stories are all written by people having followed so called 'creative writing' courses: they are formulaic in build up and the 'original' metaphors are far fetched at the best of times. The main goal of most of these stories seems to be winning (or ranking high) in a contest, rather than to tell a decent story and deliver true originality. I suppose that in times, where X-factors rule the world and where our brains are rarely challenged at all, literature can not fall behind in becoming more bland, and choose mass entertainment over originality and quality. Lost opportunity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Content Boring 4 Jan 2013
By Red
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Personally, I didn't enjoy the stories in them but that is just my taste and the cover of the book is quite boring. I've read a couple of stories out of it and that's it but it's always best to buy a magazine book with stories in before you send your work to them, which is what I did, and the magazine would not suit my stories (or vice versa).

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for research but won't be a bestseller.... 29 Jun 2012
By PPW TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book as part of my research before I entered "The Bristol Short Story competition." It gave me a good idea of what works and what doesn't. Also, it shows the kind of stories the judges go for. It was a nice easy read but nothing to stir my imagination or grip my heart. If you want better quality short stories or learn the art of what makes a great short story I would recommend getting 100 Greatest Short stories on Kindle.
