Apparently the band hate the first album and its difficult to understand their reasoning. O.K so the songs aren't as tightly knit as later albums but it hardly waste a track and the lenghty 'ballad of a has been beauty queen' has a great organ solo and builds and builds. The harmonies on 'lady constant' are just perfect and the groove on 'hymn to me' is really funky. The album does contain my favourite track in 'mayfly' and the organ work is exemplary. So its a little indulgent and of its time, but so what? The second album 'despite it all' loses the roughnest but it has classics like 'old jarrow' and 'county girl' and the standout 'ebury down'. You could tell by this album where they were heading and as good as the latter albums were these are easily their best and i like long solos!

Mention the name Brinsley Schwarz and few will remember much, if anything , about this band who never quite made it big back in the seventies.
Those who know Nick Lowe of performing and producing fame - "Cruel to be Kind", Dave Edmunds Rockpile, The Pretenders etc should discard any predjudices and listen to 'Brinsley Schwarz' - the first LP of this compilation.
The style is very much like Crosby,Stills, Nash , the Eagles and America in the acoustic guitar /soft rock sound and close vocal harmonies.
Perhaps too anodyne for some, none of the songs really have that much edge apart from Lowe's solo "Rock and Roll Women" , but the album certainly evokes all the nostalgia for that folk/rock/acoustic thing that the Eagles and co did so well.

Two Great Albums, One Great CD

Brinsley Schwartz are best known as the founders of the pub movement, but these albums come from their early country rock period, and surprisingly, they are both excellent. Fans of classic rock artists like The Band, The Dead and The Byrds will find much to admire here, as will fans of modern alt country acts like Wilco and Son Volt. DESPITE IT ALL is better than the eponymous album, because the psychedelic influence is less, but it's a fairly small difference. Tracks of note include `Slow One', `Hymn To Me' `Funk Angel' and especially `Country Girl'. These old albums are hard to find, even in good second hand record shops, so I suggest if you want em, buy em here.

Sounds Like A Great Crosby, Stills And Nash Album

Most of what I have read from critics indicates that the debut album, "Brinsley Schwarz", is this band's weakest album, while praising the second album, "Despite It All", as being a classic of the pub-rock genre. (Both are included on this generous "twofer".) But I disagree entirely with the critical consensus. My favorite Brinsley Schwarz album is the debut. Stylistically it is quite different from their subsequent albums. It lopes along at a languid pace, with lovely harmonies that sound remarkably close to those of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Some of the songs stretch out into lengthy jam sessions, while rarely straying from the relaxed tempos. It sounds a lot like the Grateful Dead, circa "American Beauty"/"Workingman's Dead". The first four songs - Hymn To Me, Shining Brightly, Rock And Roll Woman, and Lady Constant - are terrific. By the second album, "Despite It All", their sound had changed. The songs are shorter, the tempos are faster, the country music influence is more overt. This really is the blueprint for all subsequent Brinsley Schwarz albums. "Country Girl" is generally considered the standout track, although it's a bit too "Hee Haw" for my tastes. Still, all Brinsley Schwarz albums are good, and to get the great debut and the good second album on one CD is a bargain.

"And so she left with the drummer instead." Rock and Roll Women. Nick Lowe. Commentary on the rock life early in the first album. This is a sleeper. I find it in the changer without remembering that I put it there. Tuneful, happy-sounding, quirky, restful. Propelled by sophisticated simple tunes played with appropriate urgency and restraint. Almost folky. Country. Rock. Love the organ and guitar. Wry lyrics and the loose feel of music they really enjoyed playing. Without listing everything I like here, suffice it to say that I like the whole thing. It's just enough different from all the other groups and records of the genre to stand out. Worthwhile enough to buy and find in your player. Despite It All is part two of this BGO package. I'll say again how much I like these. I don't have enough money or warehouse space to accommodate all my desires and at a reasonable price I can still operate without debt or back pain. Country Girl is the first song up. "She knows how to groove me." Fiddles and country guitar galore. This album seems clearer and more upbeat though not much different than the first. Certainly obvious they have progressed. Again, I won't list everything. There's nice pedal steel on Star Ship, however. They can rock out and go "La la la" with aplomb at every turn. They are their own game and having so much fun at it that I can only be happy and love it. The two records together make a perfect play.
