Product Description

CD Description

Bringing In the Darlings is a stand-alone EP that features six new songs. It was recorded and mixed over the course of four days at Homeward Sound Studios in Ritter s current hometown of Brooklyn, New York. As Ritter says, I knew I wasn t making my next album here, but something smaller, and that smallness felt really good. I was listening to a lot of early Buddy Holly, Ricky Nelson, and the Everly Brothers, and the mood struck me one day to sit down and put to tape some songs that felt graceful and uncomplicated. Simplicity was what I wanted, musically and lyrically. During the winter months, simpler fare sticks to the ribs, but hopefully it tastes just as good. This EP is the first studio recording in some time that does not feature Josh s touring group, the Royal City Band. The only other person in the studio with Josh was Brooklyn-based producer Josh Kaufman, who contributed most of the other instruments. I ve always loved hanging out with Kaufman, Ritter says. Working with these songs, just the two of us, was the change of pace I d been craving.

I personally spoke to Josh in Belfast last year about this EP and how it was a lighter affair than the previous album. He surprised me with his honesty of how his life was in a bad place with the recording of" so Runs Away The World" intimating the breakdown of his marriage. This EP was a little bit of relaxation and letting off steam.

I hear some echoes of a failed relationship in the EP and the astute listener will be able to pick this up quite quickly too, if you ignore the upbeat musical tones and listen to the lyrics. Josh leaves a breadcrumb trail of deeper meaning throughout.

A little treasure to tide you over until the release of "The Beast in its Tracks".

By the way his new single also reflects his marriage collapse, but from the other side. It has a positive slant as to why it happened and what good came from it. He met someone else and now has a little baby girl! The dude wears his heart on his sleeve.

More to this than meets the eye. Hope you found my little review interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cosy Indeed 23 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a lovely little EP that reminds me of 'old skool' Josh Ritter and I like it! The songs are warm and cosy indeed and have a very intimate feel.

I wonder why he didn't save them for his next album? Maybe he has something else up his sleeve!

Anyway, this is certainly one to buy if you're a Josh Ritter fan and one to buy if you've never heard of him too I guess.

Enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too old fashioned. 24 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very light acoustic album. I've listened to it a few times now, the last time I listened to "Hello Starling", his 2004 mostly acoustic album straight after. This ep really suffers in comparison. It's a quickly recorded set, and also sounds quickly written. It lacks the lyrical sophistication and wit of his albums.
I do enjoy it, but from this artist it is a disappointing set.
