Biography

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five million copies of her debut album, She's So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive… Read more in Amazon's Cyndi Lauper Store

5.0 out of 5 stars It's nice is to be proven wrong, 2 Sep 2008

This review is from: Bring Ya To The Brink (Audio CD)
When I first looked at the 5-star rating in the U.S. (after more than 100 people voted on it) and in the UK (with 10+ people all giving it 5 stars) I became slightly suspicious. Was it possible to get such a level of consensus on what seemed to me a past-due-date artist? Or was it simply perhaps the gay community rallying behind one of its favourite heroines? Some sort of a payback. I had to find out...

I've always been a big fan of Cyndi's voice. I've always listed her as one of the top-5 female voices in the business. But as many may agree, I thought that after her first couple of albums like many other artists she had no powder left in her. But it's nice to be proven wrong. This is a great album.

With hints of rap in 'Into the Nightlife' or of Aretha Franklin/Pointer Sisters in 'Give it up' or even of OMD's in 'Echo'. But please do not take this comment in the direction that the album is a pastiche/meltdown of sounds and styles. No. Better to understand it like a description of a wine that has hints of vanilla, berries, and oak, and yet is none of them. It is the particular blend of the ingredients that give the wine its own personality.

It's in some way, an album that stops time. It seems that we are back in 1985 and that nothing else has happened: the wars in Iraq and none of Bush administrations; the internet and the dot com bubble; or even, the housing crisis. It brings the optimism from that era to today's doom and gloom. It's such a needed therapy! For a sample of this you only have to listen to Echo with its Limahl-esque sounds of Never Ending Story or Set Your Heart with its 'Love-Cruise' style trumpets.

If I had to say a negative would be the over use of the 'neon' sound, but even then it would like saying there's too much guitar on Led Zepellin or too much Piano on Billy Joel.

Must songs: Echo, Into the Nightlife, Lay Me Down; Give It Up; Set Your Heart; Rain On Me

Do not be tempted to song-picked this album. There's no point.

i was amazed with this album...and still am...she has done a fantastic job here,i actually found some tracks mesmerising which i cant say for many album tracks,i have to place this on my all time favourite album list(and very high up too!!)i love it.
the tracks-
High & Mighty-4/5-brings us into the album and it has a great beat that really lures you in.

into the nightlife-5/5-possibly my favourite song by her, very good dance track and a classic...i hope it does well in the UK(sure it will).

Rocking chair-5/5-another one of her best songs and definately one of my favourite songs of hers...love this song"rock me here, rock me there, rock me in my rocking chair."classic.

Lyfe-4/5-very good track and very urban feel.

Same ol'Story-4/5-(contains explicit lyrics)very good track and i found it to have a fantastic beat that reminds me of the Dantes Cove theme :).

Raging storm-5/5-i find that this track is very retro and i love its style"you can fool some people but you cant fool me" another one of my favourites.

Lay me down-5/5-possibly another contender for her best song of all time,TOUCHING and very good pace/beat and ultra-awesome style why not turning into a ballad.

give it up-5/5-has a techno feel to it while being very powerful and very good"little by little gonna turn it around"very good track.

set your heart-5/5-very powerful another great from the album.

Grab a Hold-5/5-very good and again powerful in her vocals.

Rain on Me-5/5-a great closure to what has to be the BEST ALBUM OF 2008!!!

i love the album loads and find it to be the best album of her entire career.
the body acoustic was a very good album but this is the next step ahed of the game and improved on everything she has done...it has even beaten her greatest hits compelation TWELVE DEADLY CYNS(which i love too).
a classic album from an astounding artist...keep it up Cyndi!!!im lovin it.

5.0 out of 5 stars prepare to be amazed, 27 May 2008

Forget Hard Candy this is THE "get to the dancefloor" album by a pop queen this year. Cyndi sounds alive, totally dedicated to each track and more importantly like a viable present day pop star. First single "into the nightlife" is pure joy and just when you can't take any more dancing twelve tracks in she slows it all down with some well judged beautifully sung ballads. The import has re-recorded versions of true colors and time after time which if taken in the right context really work too. Get it and be ahead of everyone else, not out in Europe till September.
