as you can tell, I'm a great fan (they're the only band whose gig's I never pass on the chance to attend when they play London) - but this was the album that hooked me from the first play.
Most of the songs are about drinking or 'dames.' Apart from the ones about dames or drinking. Decharne sings in an impossibly louche manner, sidling up to you in some Soho boho drinking den, plying you with his hard-luck stories.
'Money To Burn' is brilliant:the missing link between Pulp and Tindersticks. "The best things in life are expensive" asserts Decharne - and we know he's right.
The band use original 50's instruments and amps to create their gloriously messed-up sound:twangy guitars, drums like biscuit boxes, and vocals heavy on the echo.
If you like your rock'n'roll seedy, decadent, and played under neon lights, start here.
