Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Give or take two or three choice (if predictable) cover versions of songs by Bread and the Bee Gees, Bring It On is the largely self-penned debut album from guitar-strumming Fame Academy runner-up Alistair Griffin. A waggish former milkman and English literature student from Whitby, Griffin likes to write his own songs (how novel) and his musical preferences have been known to take in the La's and John Lennon.

Impressive though this might be, none of it meant very much to the grumpy Fame Academy judges ("bland and "unemotional", they said) who, herein, are proved to be partially right. Too many light, soft songs on Bring It On seem to have been written in a gooey-eyed state of lovestruck semi-consciousness. However, when Griffin gets urgent and hits upon a truly memorable tune he really has got what it takes to make a pop career beyond his 15 minutes of teatime fame on the gogglebox. Two such examples are the splendidly catchy "Hungry for Love" and the heart-fluttering summer pop infatuation of "Something About Her", the latter finding Griffin putting those English literature studies to awesomely ambiguous use with his strategic use of the word "defile". Write this chap off at your peril. --Kevin Maidment

BBC Review

Spiky tyke Alistair Griffin may have been outshined by a certain Cornish pixie (or pisky, if you're local) with a mooey voice on Fame Academy, going by the name of Alex Parks. But that hasn't stopped the spunky Whitby wonder from fighting back with a collection of mainly self-penned pleasant pop songs.

Surprisingly, there's only a mere smattering of covers. Trouble is, there just isn't enough meat for any self-respecting student of pop stuff to get their teeth into here. Al's album ticks along nicely enough, with jangly enthusiasm, unassuming vocals plus enough cheese to keep a whole family of mice happy 'til next Xmas.

"Bring It On", the Griffmeisters signature tune on the show, is still the standout track here with its singalong happy clappy chorus. "A Lover's Prayer", with hee bee Bee Gee Robin Gibb, is heartfelt enough, but Al's version of "Jealous Guy" is so wet it could be wrung out and used to fill Rik Waller's bath. Fame seems a wee bit far off yet, but maybe if he adopted Alex's cow-like moo that could all change.

Breathtaking debut 13 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album has been eagerly awaited by fans who had already heard Alistair on Fame Academy, knowing he had so much more to give with his own songs. This album certainly does not disappoint. Ten of the fourteen tracks have been written or co-written by Alistair, showing the range of his songwriting talent from beautiful balads "You and Me" and "Feeling Alive" through anthemic "Bring It On" and compelling "Real World", to the more upbeat "Something about Her" and rock/pop "Oblivion" and "Hungry for Love".

They have obviously felt the need to include some covers from Fame Academy, which is a shame when Alistair has so many of his own songs to offer. That said, they have chosen the best three - "Everything I Own" sounds wonderful, Alistair gives a fine performance "Jealous Guy" and as for "Wherever You Will Go" I far prefer Alistairs version to the original. The weakest track for me is the "Lovers Prayer" duet with Robin Gibb, a nice enough song but lacks the impact of many of the the tracks on this album.

It's hard to choose a favorite track, as it is rare for me to like so many tracks from one album, so I'll choose three - two breathtaking balads "You and Me" and "Feeling Alive" with the rocky "Hungry For Love". Tip for the next single "In Your Smile"

People criticise singers coming from TV talet shows, but with this offering, Alistair shows a real singing/songwriting talent and has a great "real music" feel being guitar/piano/drums based and not over produced. Wonderful debut. Can't wait for more.

Alistair Griffin... runner up in Fame Academy and now he's set to make it big time. All you that have heard his debut single Bring It On will, surely agree. He's young, talented, a fantastic singer/songwriter, and he's gripped the hearts of many devoted fans. (me being one of them!) His album is sure to be good. From the 30 second clips that can be preveiwed on his official website, this is proved. Oblivion, seems to be one the most popular so far, but all 10 of his 'own written' tracks have the potential to go far. This is new talent as we've never seen before, help him get the recognition he deserves.

I preordered Alistair Griffin's Bring It On Album last year and couldn't wait for it to be delivered early Jan and I'm absolutely delighted at the enjoyment I've received for less than £9!! I have been listening to Alistair's album since it was delivered every day when I drive to and from work and I absolutely love it! I find Alistair's voice soothing and catchy in majority of his songs, and the lyrics easy to pick up and sing to and I will listen to a track over and over again. I love the tempo of the music as well which is also soothing and catching and resonates with me long after I've switched off the CD.

I cried when I listened to A Lover's Prayer with Robin Gibb which I found absolutely touching; and it took me a while to figure out which was Alistair and which was Robin singing! I love every song on the album which for me is unusual as I usually only like a third or so of favourite songs; I find Alistair's voice really soothing and lovely and easy to listen to ... .

I watched Alistair on Fame Academy on and off and thought his music was ok; though now I think his music is great having been able to familiarise myself more with it - it's just grown on me daily. I find myself hearing his songs in my head when I'm not in the car and feel drawn to switching on his music as soon as possible. It's like I'm addicted to it and I've had the album for a few weeks now and still haven't tired of it. Amazing! It's wonderful! It's very calming for me; especially to sing along and I love feeling great when I've driven to work and/or home again having listened to Alistair's album. I love his lyrics as well which are great!

I found it somewhat hard to get used to Alistair singing Jealous Guy though it grew on me; however I still prefer the original artist.

Let's hope that Alistair brings us lots more music and enjoyment and keep up the good work!! Well done Alistair!

I could write more but have run out of time!
