"We recorded the album in a punk-as-f@*k two weeks in Salem, Oregon," explains lead singer Eddie Argos. Product Description

CD Description

Brilliant! Tragic! is the fourth studio album from art-rockers Art Brut, and was once again produced by Black Francis. The follow-up to Art Brut Vs Satan, the album is significant because it features frontman Eddie Argos actually singing for the first time on record, and sees the band return to their punkier roots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snarl - Along - A - Argos ! 6 Jun 2011
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Make no mistake; there's a lot of fun to be had here!
'Brilliant! Tragic!' is Art Brut's fourth album and I
have to be honest that it is the first time I've heard them.

It's wonderfully wonky music; punky in a lighthearted but
full-bodied way. Frontman Eddie Argos slithers and snarls
his way through these ten tracks like a good 'un! I laughed
out loud several times at the lyrics; some of them are very
funny indeed. 'Lost Weekend' is a particularly good example;
it's got some classy head-over-heels guitar playing on it
and a bunch of edgy riffs so full of unaffected energy that
Mrs Wolf and I got quite carried away creating a synchronised
dance routine to it (we may be getting on but our joints are
still in good working order!) With lines like : 'I'm sorry if
I embarrassed you, by saying something stupid like "I love you"'
I need no further evidence to be fully convinced of its worth.

'Sexy Sometimes' bumps and grinds like a beast. Drummer Mikey
Breyer lays down a stonking backbeat over which Mr Argos hisses
and whispers with good grace and self-effacing charm about the
limitations of his own vocal ability. As if he (or we) really give
a damn! I'm perfectly at home with imperfection when it's this good!

'Martin Kemp Welch Five A-Side Football Rules' lasts little more than
two minutes but whips up a veritable storm of good electricity!

Ian Catskilkin really is a fine guitarist. The kind of chords he lays
down on 'I Am The Psychic' would strip the bark off a whole avenue
of plane trees! Listen too to the boa constrictor lines winding in
and out of 'Ice Hockey' to appreciate the full measure of his skills.

Final track 'Sealand' is a hoot; a singalong, jingly-jangly treasure
of a song which brings the album to a joyously uplifting conclusion.

Art Brut are the biz! More Brilliant(!) than Tragic(!) in every way!!

Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent band 9 Sep 2012

Frank Black and Art Brut make tragic magic. You have to hate people who are so talented that they make it seem easy. But you can't hate Art Brut because they bring you along on their fun ride. Kudos to Eddie and the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best, quirky band you've never heard of 14 Feb 2012

Art Brut are quite likely to be polarizing, you'll either get what they're about or you won't.

The not quite singing approach to vocals, the witty ironic lyrics, the insistent beats - I love it all. This is clever, grown up pop; vaguely in the same hemisphere as They Might Be Giants, more serious about their art than HMHB.

Go on, try something different. You'll be glad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant ! Tragic ! 27 Dec 2011
By Mark Donovan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Art Brut deserves more fans. Their first two albums, imho were kinda spotty. Some great songs, some not so great songs. But they really delivered the goods on their third album Art Brut vs Satan. Listeners want perfection, for every song to be killer. Its not like the 80's when many bands grew up recording on small labels. Art Bruts second album may have been too British sounding for american ears, sort of like Blur. And maybe not enough of their early fans hung around for their third album. Too Bad and that sucks, because whats not to love here ?. A double lead guitar attack. Muscular tasty riffs, a great Bass and Drum sound. A charismatic Lead singer with an attitude a unique voice and something to say. But most importantly , Great catchy songs. Black Francis produced the album. He reigns Eddie Argos in a bit. The songs are more straight forward, less wordy, if you've heard Art Brut before, I'll say they haven't lost their sense of humor. As a fan of countless bands . I like to see a band change, grow, evolve. I just hate when great bands have to pack it in because the $$ just isn't there. This album was just a blip in the music headlines this year. If you were ever a fan of that petrol emotion, or PIL or The Clash, etc. Get some Art Brut for heavens sake, because they deserve the fans and you deserve to hear a great band.
