3.0 out of 5 stars Not brilliant 9 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I want to learn HTML/CSS. This book looked good but in reality it is driving me up the wall -

1) It is full of typographical errors that made me wonder which bit is correct.

2) Early lessons left me with the feeling that what I have just troubled to learn is deprecated in the latest (published) version of HTML and so shouldn't be used.

3) There have been changes at W3C since this book was written, so as this doesn't cover XHTML another book will be required to fill you in on the changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book 27 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback
Starting from pretty near scratch in HTML/CSS understanding, I found this a very useful book. It is clear, doesn't overwhelm with detail and by the time you've tried the examples for each section, you're left with a good understanding and enough knowledge to put things into practice with your own websites.

There are a few typos later in the book but hopefully these have been removed in the latest version.
The book doesn't attempt to cover everything, which is beneficial. I find that learning enough to write code for your own website, then adding on the details of the less used elements in HTML/CSS either by self learning or more advanced books, is the quickest way to learn.

Highly recommended for people with some understanding of programming and websites but it is not comprehensive enough for someone who already understands HTML & CSS.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing 29 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
This is not the book for a beginner or, perhaps, for *anyone* wanting to learn about HTML and CSS. It's written like a poor school textbook, with the author apparently expecting the reader to read the whole thing in a fairly short period and then learn its contents. The concepts and principles are not explained in sufficient detail, and many of the examples are unhelpful. The book is part of a series where the editors seem to have failed to grasp the basic requirements of IT tutorials.

It's essential for books of this kind to act as a reference, into which the reader can dip and, particularly, look things up. The contents list is not adequate as a guide to the book's (limited) contents and, unforgivably, there is no index. I was given this as a source of information on CSS, from which I had to get results in a short period of time. It failed me completely and, instead, I was forced to go and buy a much better book, David Powers' "Getting started with CSS".
