4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful resource for freelancers 6 Jun 2011
By igloo
Format:Paperback
Congratulations to Leif on creating such a useful resource and guide for freelancers - for those that are just starting out or thinking of taking the leap, but also for those who, like myself, have been freelancing for years!

This book is quick and easy to read and doesn't bog you down. It strikes the happy balance between being very informative but keeping things brief, so people can get the right information in a short space of time. The book offers the basics and encourages you to go and find out more by providing loads of useful resources with each and every chapter. The book covers every aspect of freelancing and is written in a very honest, light hearted way that makes it really easy to read and relate to and never overwhelms.

I wish I'd had something like this when I first started out as a freelancer as it would have helped me enourmously and got me on the right track and saved me making some fundamental mistakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for anybody considering freelancing 8 Jun 2011
By S. Jack
Format:Paperback
I'd recommend this book to anyone hesitating on the brink of a freelance career, or those who have just taken the plunge. If, like me, you've hitherto been consumed by coding, or whatever it is that specialists in your field do, Brilliant Freelancer will open your eyes to everything else that is involved in running a micro-business. But it will turn up the lights gently so you don't get scared off the prospect for good.

The books starts by helping you think through your suitability to be a freelancer, then talks you through making the transition from employment to being your own boss. It gives advice on how to find work through sales and marketing (including chapters on blogging and networking), how to price your work, and how to manage clients when you've got them.

You may be be asking yourself how you'll get anything done without a boss to crack the whip - and Leif has thoughtfully included a chapter on Motivation. If you have the opposite problem, and can't get enough of the drug called work, Dr Kendall is there to remind you (in a chapter entitled Healthy Body, Healthy mind) that "You're selling you, so look after your product".

There's one part of the book that I feel could be expanded, and that is in the financial department. Book-keeping, after all, is the one part of every business that's mandated by law. Brilliant Freelancer does little more than skim the surface here, and at the very least could do with some recommendations for further reading.

With his easy-going style, no-nonsense advice, and flashes of humour, Leif presents himself as the wise friend who has seen it all before. He's not afraid to point out where you'll find the going tough, but he's equally quick to highlight the potential rewards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely useful 31 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Quick disclaimer: I am briefly interviewed in this book for 'The client's side of the story' chapter, as someone who regularly employs freelancers. And as I'm now also about to take the plunge into freelancing myself, this couldn't have been a more timely read. As the above reviewers have stated, more than anything this is a genuinely useful and informative book; by the end you'll feel more than adequately prepared to make the leap, if you haven't already done so. It manages to strike exactly the right balance in that it contains a healthy level of realism about the potential pitfalls of freelancing, but backs this up with practical advice, real-world scenarios and lots of encouragement. Overall, a really constructive, well-organised and well-written book that I will be keeping close at hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, entertaining, clear and concise. 21 Jun 2011
By Jack
Format:Paperback
I've read some books from the Brilliant series - this is one of my favorites so far.

I've enjoyed being a freelancer for a few years now and after reading this book I found that I had learned some new things; reinforced some others and confirmed a few other things that I wasn't quite sure about.

In short: A great primer for those just starting out but also a great reference book for more experienced freelancers - for those times when you need a bit of encouragement and guidance.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only read one book about Freelancing... 21 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
...make it this one. Seriously, especially if you are UK based. Having read mountains of books about writing, copywriting and freelance journalism - Kendall's book was a breath of fresh air. Why? Well, because his tone is spot on. He is quietly inspiring without going over the top. And he packs in practical details you can pick up and use. The book earns it's cover price with it's wealth of useful information. Then it goes a step further and touches on the emotional and psychological challenges you can expect to face. It is a very human look at doing business in a way that is becoming more common. Kendall doesn't pretend it is a bed of roses but we are left feeling a little of the excitement and satisfaction that the writer himself obviously gets from being self-employed. I'm still struggling to get to that place but this book was a great incentive to stay focused and keep moving. It shows at the very least that there is life on the other side of the monthly pay cheque and it is worth the trouble to get there. Excellent work.
