Howard Werth recorded for the Famous Charisma label both with the cult band Audience and as a solo artist. This album is his first solo effort and features Howards trademark vocals and electro strung guitar prominent on some tracks. Standout tracks are 'The Embezzler' ("life here in Rio is fine but I must admit I do miss my begonias and cat..." a great line), 'Midnight Flyer' released as a single but sank without trace plus the albums two mega-tracks 'Ugly Water' and 'The Aleph'. This cd release also features two bonus tracks. The first is the single 'Lucinda' which the sleeve notes describe as a 'radio hit' which I think means it was played a lot on the radio but not many people bought it and more's the pity as it's a great song. The second is a cut not included on the original vinyl release for timing reasons; the sleeve notes describe 'Mechanical Dream' as a hidden gem but I don't particularly like it. Incidentally, the keyboard player is listed as Mike Moran who I assume is the same Mike Moran who sang 'Rock Bottom' with Lyndsey de Paul on Britains entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in the late 70s - Mikes piano playing is particularly evident on 'Midnight Flyer'. The albums producer is the late, great Gus Dudgeon who produced so many of Elton Johns hits and the quality of his input shows throughout this refreshing album

Had this as an LP, and it was "Brilliant". Transfers well to CD. Great vocals, an impressive array of musicians and session guys (some of Elton John's regulars) giving us a wide range of styles, with unusual time signatures and surprises. Well worth a buying. A talented guy.

The missing Audience album? 26 May 2009

This is a great recording. I have all of the Howard Werth solo projects and this is definitely my favorite. To me, this would have been the next Audience album, and it certainly sounds like Audience to me. The other Howard Werth albums are a bit "poppy" for me, but this one is fantastic. Get it while you still can!
