Product Description

The painted decoration of the old working boats on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal was one of the most colourful of Britain's folk traditions. It was last undertaken profesionally in the early 1960s, but no record of its origins and styles had been written until now. Michael Clarke has already published many books and articles about the canal's history whilst Sam Yates served his time as boat builder at Hodson's Boatyard near Blackburn and undertook all the traditional decorative painting for serveral years before traffic on the canal's main line ceased in 1963.

The book looks at variation in style along the canal, then considers the origins and finally work at the boatyard is considered in detail and compared to other yards along the canal with examples of designs and colours used.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Find 16 Sep 2012
By K.E.C
Format:Paperback
This is such a find! For anyone interested in Leeds and Liverpool Canal History, it's detailed and colourful, opening up a very individual style of decoration, so different from the usual roses and castles. Mike Clark explains the scrolls and geometric designs that were lavished on the barges, captured from an era that almost slipped away. The book captures the images of historic boatyards, barges and their kit, through photos, drawings and diagrams. Read it or just look at the pictures, and be inspired.
