Review

Harry Gaston writes with such clarity and his use of the English language never fails to capture the reader. This history is not only for the cognoscente, health professional, historian, or user of the service - it is a book to be enjoyed by all whether or not Brighton Born, or Sussex Bred. Baroness Cumberlege, former health minister and chairman of the expert maternity group that published the influential Changing Childbirth Report in 1993. --Foreword to Brighton Born, Sussex Bred

The way these changes have taken place is explained in Brighton Born, Sussex Bred. It tells the story of Brighton s maternity hospitals: the Sussex Maternity, Brighton General and, since 1970, the Royal Sussex County. The author, local historian Harry Gaston, has previously published four other hospital books. Like his previous publications, this book is written in a very accessible style and is the result of extensive and painstaking research. ---Jennifer Drury --My Brighton and Hove.org.uk

Product Description

A hundred years ago a dozen women died in childbirth every day. Hospitals were especially dangerous places, so many women succumbing to childbed fever (later called puerperal sepsis) usually transmitted by a midwife or obstetrician. No wonder that the original Sussex Maternity Hospital did not actually admit women, preferring to send midwives to deliver them in their own homes. Today, its successor hospital, the Royal Sussex County, deals with the vast majority of confinement in the city. Brighton Born, Sussex Bred tells how this change took place. Tracing the history of the maternity wards on three Brighton hospitals it shows how hospitals have become the preferred choice for many women, while at the same time providing the services of midwives to women who choose a home birth. The change from the days of Dickens Sarah Gamp and the old workhouses is to be expected. But what will surprise many readers are the changes that have taken place in living memory so vividly illustrated by the reminiscences of thirty local midwives and mothers from the 1950s and 60s that are included in the book.

A review from Mary 1 Nov 2011
I am delighted with the new book and have found a lot of references which bring back memories. It is also interesting to see the difference between those very early years of giving birth and present times.

Auntie Em always made sure that Christmas was a very special time for staff and mothers with lots of small gifts and surprises. She never came home for Christmas but we celebrated again with her beginning of January. I know she was always thrilled to have a Christmas Day birth.

I knew Sister Ansell very well; she was Auntie to us children from an early age.
John Chillman used to take me out to shows and to see the Argus being printed.
The Beynon's were great people.

I have kept a lot of photos and newspaper cuttings of my Aunt's years at Sussex Maternity but I couldn't keep them all. Famous film stars and singers used to open the Gift Days. She had a good collection of various storks given to her by grateful patients. These have been passed on to family members.

Am waiting to show the book to the family. My sons remember staying at the hospital.
