Product Description

Lavan Chitward is a very unhappy young man; pulled away from his country home by his parents' ambitions and resettled in the big city of Haven, he is desperately lonely, bullied and beaten at school, ignored by his parents. It is not surprising that he falls ill -- but his illness is the first manifestation of a terrible power, the Gift of the Firestorm, a power which can and does kill. If controlled, the Gift of the Firestorm can save Valdemar, but if it is uncontrolled, it will destroy the country -- and him. Chosen by the Companion Kalira, brought into the ranks of the Heralds of Valdemar, Lavan finds acceptance and hope for the first time -- but war with Karse threatens to engulf the Kingdom and only Lavan Firestorm stands between Valdemar and destruction -- and only then if he can harness his dreadful power to his will.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mercedes Lackey is back on form, 9 Oct 2002
After the disappointment of the "Owlflight" trilogy, which, for me, turned the Hawkbrothers into little more than grown-up Boy Scouts, Mercedes Lackey has returned to form with "Brightly Burning".

The book tells the story of Lavan "Firestorm" Chitward, a background character from Lackey's "Valdemar" series, and introduces many of the recurring character types and themes in them. For anyone who has read the series (or, in fact, the reviews on the back cover), the ending won't be a surprise, but the story is so well told that this doesn't matter.

True, it returns yet again to the formula of "unhappy misfit discovers secret powers & finds his place in the world", but it's a beautiful read. Lackey is a master at inspiring emotion in her readers - I found myself grimacing in sympathy more than once - and sweeping you along in the story so you don't notice the technical weaknesses in her writing.

It's a feelgood, comfort-reading book, the literary equivalent of chocolate, and (to agree with the quote from "Starburst" on the back cover) "...a good point to jump in..." if you haven't read any Valdemar before. A definite recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burning Brighter, 29 Mar 2003

I had never before read a book by Mercedes Lackey so the ideas represented in this book of companions and heralds were all new to me. The writing of the book covered such modern issues of acceptance, disability, bullying that it was not hard to become involved with the characters. Unlike some books where you have to read the first chapter if not more to get into the characters with this story it was instant. The story is smooth flowing and filled with excitement and tears. Read and enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly dissapointing, 25 Nov 2003
This book has a good plot, and you do honestly want to keep reading it, but once you reach the end there is a tendency to think, "Oh. Is that it?" The ending is poorly written, and there is a feeling that Lackey was simply looking for a quick fix to finish the book off.
I like Lackey's writing as a rule, but this book seems far too unfinished- which is a pity, as it could have been much better if the author had perhaps spent a little more time on the ending in particular.
If you haven't read Lackey's work before, please don't judge it all by the standards of this book. There are much better ones out there to be read.
