I own a number of Laurie Anderson CDs and none of them is remotely as good as this. I read somewhere that the vocals were recorded with the best microphone available and whatever it cost, it's worth it. Every subtle nuance of emphasis and intonation comes through crystal clear, highlighting the multiple meanings in the lyrics, which are both intelligent and poetic. Unlike some of her other work, the words are not simply clever for their own sake, but part of something affecting and insightful. Furthermore this album hangs together as a complete work, mapping out a strange and hostile landscape using highly original ideas.

The music for the most part, is simply a bunch of noises and rhythms which come together to provide an atmospheric backdrop and echo to perfection the darkness of the vocal-led songs. Listen carefully and you can pick the out influences of high-calibre collaborators such as Eno/Gabriel/Lanois etc.

I would imagine that it would sound terrible on an AM radio, but if you listen to this using decent equipment, you will be amazed at how good it sounds. Highly recommended for people on the lookout for the strange and unusual.

For me all of Laurie's studio albums are produced in the shadow of United States Live. Many of them plunder USL for tracks and ideas. Bright Red is one of those that don't. It occupies a less experimental and less eccentric sound world. The vocals are very much to the fore and Laurie is on impeccible form here. Rarely has she sounded this good, this in control. Warmth replices the dry expression of USL. She is joined by some capable co-singers on some of the tracks. Brian Eno's production is just perfect. And the material is consistently brilliant and the lyrics moving and occassionally disturbing.

If you are a Laurie fan, then you need this album.

If you are not, then it is the arguably the best introduction to her work this side of Talk Normal (the compilation album) or Big Science.

Her best. 28 Feb 2005
By Jason Mills VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Less a set of songs, more an audio experience. If you're interested in a genuinely intelligent and even disturbing recording, you'll find this album compelling. The last track alone is worth the price of admission. Sometimes her stuff just seems pretentious; on this album, everything is just right. Very unusual, very worthwhile.
