A TRIUMPH 25 Oct 2004
Format:Audio CD
To put you in the picture, I am not a great fan of folk music, unless it's very, very good so I am constantly surprised at how much I love this record.

I bought the original vinyl shortly after it was released, but as the anoraks amongst you will remember, there were an awful lot of copies in circulation, which were pressed off-centre and I was unlucky enough to buy one of these. Many years later I found another copy in a second-hand shop and dashed home eager with anticipation, only to discover I had another copy which went wayo wayo wayo!

I was well pleased then when this came out on cd, even though it was only initially available in Germany (maybe what the 'German Folk' stuff is in the description. I can assure any curious reader that this music has nothing to do with Germany!) and cost me a small fortune.

There is not one bad track on the record, but special mention must be given to 'Never be the same again', 'Danny Rose' and the absolutely stunning 'Red wine and promises'. Sad that Lal has passed away and that Mike rarely performs anymore, but let this serve as a reminder of how great contemporary folk can be, once it sheds it's pretensions.

Ably supported on many tracks by folk nobility, including Richard Thompson, this album is one of the few in it's genre, which can genuinely be called a masterpiece.

This is one of those albums that genuinely is a lost (ish) classic. Great original material sung by various members of the Waterson family with back up by folk royalty, including among others, Richard Thompson. The music (largely) angular, dirge like ballads as bleak as the north york moors mixed with bright patches of sunshine provided by a sgt peppers pop sensibility. Very poetic and original lyrics that are modern takes on the themes of love and loss, stories of death and reinvention, described by the Waterson Familiy in their versions of traditional material. In not sure why this album isn't better known...possibly not folk enough for the folk purists and not pop enough for others. Really should be reissued at a sensible price by a more sympathetic and better resourced label. Maybe that's why its not better known?

As other reviewers have pointed out, the money earned by this brilliant recording has not found its way to the artists for decades. DON'T buy this CD - Mike Waterson (and Lal's estate) will get nothing from it.

We can only continue to hope that the Leader/Trailer catalogue will one day re-emerge in the hands of people who care about the music and those who made it. And that at least some of the artists are still alive to see it happen.

Post script, November 2011: since I wrote this review, Mike Waterson has died. The shame that attaches to those who think they 'own' this music deepens with each passing year, and with the passing of each one whose music it really was.
