Book Description

Gwynna had fallen from grace once, bearing a stillborn child out of wedlock. Determined to have a respectable future, she finds a position for herself as a nursemaid at Hungerton House. But just as she begins to find her feet, the secrets of her past are revealed. She is swiftly dismissed but not before she becomes the target of a lascivious groom. And even afterwards she is pursued by Hungerton, an evil old man who wishes to send her back to the gutters. She returns home to Hedderby, only to find the small Lancashire town reeling after the arson attack on the local pub and music hall, The Pride. Her only ally is a talented carpenter, also once employed by Hungerton. His former employer will stop at nothing, however, to bring him back to the estate. Will money buy revenge and destroy two lives, or will the young lovers find a way to achieve their dreams?

    Review

Praise for Anna Jacobs: 'Catherine Cookson fans will cheer!' (Peterborough Evening Telegraph)

Anna Jacobs' books are deservedly popular. She is one of the best writers of Lancashire sagas around. (Historical Novels Review)

Once again you have given us a story that has me hooked from the first page to the last. The characters are so alive that I am loath to call them characters, they are people - so real (Reader from Scotland on OUR MARY ANN)

An exciting book of immensely brilliant character portrayal and a great storyline (Bangor Chronicle on OUR EVA)

Another cracking read with a vivid insight into family relationships (Coventry Evening Telegraph on OUR EVA)

    Book Description

The triumphant follow-up to PRIDE OF LANCASHIRE and STAR OF THE NORTH.

    More About the Author

Anna Jacobs grew up in Lancashire and emigrated to Australia, but still visits the UK regularly to see her family and do research, something she loves. She is addicted to writing and she figures she'll have to live to be 120 at least to tell all the stories that keep popping up in her imagination and nagging her to write them down. She's also addicted to her own hero, to whom she's been happily married for many years.

Anna also writes fantasy novels as Shannah Jay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Historical - Emotional and Poignant 5 Jun. 2007
    Format:Paperback
In reading this novel I was struck by the similarities in style of the late great Catherine Cookson. It thrilled me to find a novelist who could write so well the sagas of common folk who rise above the repression of the wealthy and find a better independent life on their own. Reading BRIGHT DAY DAWNING will give the reader a sample of the poignancy and struggles one overcomes to awake to a newer and brighter day dawning!

In BRIGHT DAY DAWNING you are introduced to Gwynna Jones, a lovely caring young woman who having borne a stillborn child out of wedlock would be forever marked as a loose woman. Gwynna managed to find a position as a nursemaid at the home of the wealthy Hungertons through the efforts of her friend Essie. When her past was revealed to the old master, she was promptly turned out. Returning to Hedderby she was attacked but then saved by a wonderful young man by the name of Lucas Kemp.

Lucas Kemp was a talented young carpenter who had dreams of becoming independent and was determined to escape the bondage mechanisms the old master of Hungerton used in subjugating his workers to remain forever in his debt. Lucas was smarter than that and planned an escape from under Hungerton's thumb but in the process made a bitter enemy who didn't like losing. As vile as they come Hungerton would release his minions to force Lucas back to his estate and do anything to destroy the lives of both Gwynna and Lucas in the process.

This was a remarkable story and wish I had started with the previous books (PRIDE OF LANCASHIRE and STAR OF THE NORTH) to fully engross myself in this marvelous Preston family saga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Jacobs - Music Hall series 13 May 2013
    Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Great fan of Anna Jacobs. I think that the Music Hall series completes the entire Catalogue of Her work - I have read everything now. I am a retired epatriate Lancastrian, have lived in many of the places she writes about and visited most of the Australian places too. She fills in many of the blanks about life in Lancashire that my Grand Parents skimmed over - indeed my Grand Parents lived even closer to the parts of Lancashire that Anna writes about.

Anna's books are always a great read even those set in the current century.

But, there is always a but isn't there. After so many books its not difficult to see the plot, good guys, bad guys and all.

Highly recommended especially to folk to whom Anna is a new discovery - go for it, there are so many books to read. The only caution is planning. Research the sequence of the novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent saga, engrossing. 3 Mar. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really look forward to reading these books by Anna Jacobs. They are excellent. My Mum, Mother in law and Auntie all love them too. I am always on the look out for Anna Jacobs books wherever I go, but they are not really in second hand bookshops that much , perhaps because they are being passed on to family and friends, I think people love them too much to part with them. I certainly do.
I buy mine mainly through Amazon, either in paperback or Kindle format.
The characters are so well written that you feel part of their families as the reader, and I can't put the books down, everything else takes second place!
Also Anna's books are uplifting and help show how things can be dealt with positively.
    Thoroughly recommended.

The first of a series of 4 books telling of the lives of the Preston family and the others who influence their lives. It gives an insight into life in the 19th century in a Lancashire town. It is a heartwarming tale of hard working folk and their trials as well as their sucesses. Thoroughly entertaining.
