Book Description

19 Jan 2012 Brief Histories
Elizabeth II is within a few years of becoming the longest-reigning British monarch. A personally quiet, modest and dutiful person, she is far better-informed about the lives of her subjects than they often realize. She has known every Prime Minister since Winston Churchill and every American President since Eisenhower.Yet what of the woman behind the crown? The book seeks to take a new look at this exhaustively-documented life and show how Queen Elizabeth became the person she is. Who, and what, have been the greatest influences upon her? What are her likes and dislikes? What are her hobbies? Who are her friends? What does she feel about the demands of duty and protocol? Is she really enjoying herself when she smiles during official events? How differently does she behave when out of the public eye? Examining the places in which she grew up or has lived, the training she received and her attitudes to significant events in national life, it presents a fresh view of one of recent history's most important figures.

A well written, well organised narrative which ptojects a very clear profile of the Queen from her early life as Princess Elizabeth to her mature years as an experienced, exceptionally active Monarch. After a general introduction to the unique nature and functions of the monarchy, the author follows chronologically and diligently the varied aspets of her reign. Very readable and most enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book 15 Aug 2013

I have not read all of this book yet, but so far I think it gives a good insight into queen Elizabeth's life and it is written well. I have two reasons for only giving it four stars, firstly it doesn't go into any real detail about queen Elizabeth's life which can make the book seem like a list (but I suppose you expect a bit of this considering it is labelled 'brief') secondly I think this book portrays princess Margaret rather negatively and it only shows here weaknesses and it fails to mention her clever and amusing wit and her good taste and interest in, fashion. I think 'the little princesses' by Marion Crawford gives a far superior account of the princesses characteristics and personalities. But overall I would recommend this book because it does what it is supposed to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and well-written portrayal 25 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must firstly state that I am bias because I absolutely adore our Queen and Royal family but here goes...Paterson has written a touching and truthful history of Queen Elizabeth. He goes into detail but doesn't stray from the point (a brief mention of Diana's passing) so that it remains very much about the titular. Although the title says "brief" I think it was really sufficient and felt it didn't leave anything important out. He does speculate (nonsensical things like her breakfast habits) but also backs this up with honesty, either telling you the source or admitting it may be a rumour. I learnt a lot about our Queen and it was easy to read - more a story then a factual history book. It is also a useful tool to put a lot of anti-monarchies to shame as it is full of anecdotes and 'a day in the life'. A must read if you're British, it will make you believe!
