Review

A very exciting book, thoroughly recommended. --Sea Breezes

Colonel Connaughton's account of the wars of the last quarter of a century is enjoyable, stimulating, sharp, and not least, thought-provoking. The result is a cracker of a book; more than that, let us hope that this powerful and well argued work assists in the disposal of so much casual complacency about how successful military operations are conducted in our distracted and violent world. --Professor Brian Reid, Dept of War Studies, Kings, London

This book should be read by all political and military chiefs before committing their countries to war. --General Sir Michael Rose

Excellently written. --British Army Review

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Reading, 25 Aug 2009
By Michael Anderson (Dundee, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Unfortunately, this book is not worth reading and not worthy of its title. This is surprising and shocking given the credentials of the author and the creditability of the quoted reviewers.

The fundamental problem with this book is that the author does not clearly or adequately state his idea of modern warfare which is then developed by histories of the selected battles. The author seems to have written the book with idea of keeping it simple for the general reading but the end product is too simple in the sense that it lacks a developed argument.

This problem of the book is compounded by two other issues.

Firstly, the selected battles seem are biased towards the British and American experience of modern warfare at the expense of other experiences. For example, Russia in Chechyna and Israel in Lebanon.

Secondly, rather careless errors of detail. For example, referring to the movie "Apocalypse Now" as "Armageddon Now"; and, when writing concerning the US XVIII Corps during Operation Desert Storm, the corps was placed to the north, rather than to the west, of the US I MEF.

If you wish to read a book to understand modern warfare written by a former British Army officer, I would recommend "The Utility of Force: The Art of War in the Modern World" by Rupert Smith.
