More About the Author

Helen McCarthy (1951- ) has been researching and writing about Japanese popular culture since 1981. After a decade hearing that there was "no interest in that sort of thing" she founded a magazine, Anime UK, to disprove the claim. Her first book was published just over a year later, and she's been writing about anime, manga and Japan ever since. Her work has been translated into Chinese, French, Italian and Korean.

In 2010 she won a Harvey Award - the Oscars of the comics world - for her tenth book, 'The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga'. The book was also nominated for an Eisner Award. Helen's other awards include a Japan Foundation Award for furthering understanding of Japanese culture in the United Kingdom.

She designs needlework and writes poetry. In her spare time, she studies and re-creates historic clothing and costume. She lives in London with an artist and a universe of toys.

Review

If you have any interest in what manga are about, this pocket guide will give you a thorough overview. If you are already a fan of a few manga titles, A Brief History of Manga will introduce you to the full range of genres and show you what you are missing. --Fred Patten, AmoXcalli

It is completely worth it to page through this tiny volume...The format makes it extremely easy to read as well...As is, I love the book. The hodgepodge of manga drawings on the cover show just how far reaching manga is in Japan. --Kory Cerjak, Fandom Post

Accessible, digestible, and engaging this is a must-by for manga fans. Michael Dodson, Neo

A Brief History of Manga is a wonderful and insightful book... This is a perfect book for an introduction into the history of manga. --Lawrence Brenner, Nerd Reactor

For manga fans, this book is something of a must-buy. Gorgeously presented in a quality hard-back cover and lovingly illustrated on every page, this pocket guide takes you through a chronological history of manga from its beginnings right on up to the present day (Attack on Titan hysteria and all).

If anything, the book could be longer - I was certainly left wanting more. It's well written, the titles chosen to focus on in detail feel correct, and above all, it acts as a wonderful way of dipping in to suggestions of things to check out next. Whether you're already a hardened manga fanatic or just starting out in terms of picking out titles to invest your time in; you can't go wrong with this guide when it comes to offering a taste of what's on offer.

Gorgeous and informative 7 July 2015

Format: Hardcover
Although small in size, this is a sturdy hardback with library binding and full color throughout. Arranged chronologically, each double-spread highlights an important year in the evolution of manga, focusing on a particular author, title, or trend. Most manga fans are already familiar with Osamu Tezuka but he doesn't appear until page 24, and I was fascinated to learn of many earlier important figures, such as Machiko Hasegawa, a woman author first published in 1936 who created the popular comic Sazae-San, which went on to become the longest-running animated television series in the world! Although each main entry is only a few paragraphs long (in tiny font), there are usually one or two short sidebars and several illustrations -- not enough for a comprehensive history, but with several interesting nuggets of trivia on each page. The author includes several prominent female authors/titles and highlights important developments in the growth of manga titles in the United States. The reading level is geared toward adults or older teens and there is brief mention of hentai/Overfiend, so younger manga fans should probably start with something else.

A great read for anyone looking to learn more about manga's deep history in Japan. I used it as a reference for a research paper I did on manga last year. The book's year by year approach made it very easy to understand the developement from one style to another and one age to another.
