I found this book absorbing and thought-provoking, interweaving a wealth of information and ideas about Anxiety drawn from history, philosophy, medicine and epidemiological research with the author's account of her own episodes of anxiety disorder and experiences with treatment by drugs and other therapies. Her recollections and reflections are humorously and entertainingly presented, yet the subject matter is often dark and painful. There are some fascinating glimpses of her upbringing as part of a distinguished Canadian family and some interesting observations about mental ill-health in social, historical and cross-cultural contexts, illuminated with detail garnered from personal anecdote, literature, biography, press reports and academic research. In such a short book, it cannot be more than a whistle-stop tour but the references to her sources are there for those who want to pursue any of the topics further.

This book connects anxiety sufferers and non-sufferers alike. The title "A brief history of Anxiety (yours and mine) conveys this breadth of subject matter, reminding us that we are all somewhere on the universal anxiety spectrum. But someone going through their own Anxiety disorder can feel intensely isolated and disconnected, and might perhaps be seeking something more practical - if so I recommend a self-help book such as "Free Yourself from Anxiety"
