Product Description

Product Description

"No", Paul went on, "a good country to go to for your first big expedition - so to speak - would be Nepal. What do you think, Nathalie?" "Oh yes! That would be perfect!" she replied enthusiastically. "We flew there for a few days when we were in India and stayed in Kathmandu and Darjeeling. I loved it. Just midway between the extremes." A series of clichés passed in front of my mind's eye: Mount Everest, the Annapurna, the paradise of the hippies in the seventies, the fierce Gurkhas of the British Army. This was not enough to form an opinion of that country. And definitely not enough to motivate me. When a bookish student follows his friends' advice and embarks on a journey to far-off Nepal, things are bound not to go according to plan. Etienne Livingstone offers here more than a voyage of self - discovery. He gives us a perceptive glimpse of what was, until very recently, the last Hindu kingdom on Earth

4.0 out of 5 stars Travel with my nephew, 6 Sep 2010

This review is from: A Brief Escape to Nepal (Paperback)
This is a charming book, detailing Etienne's journey to Nepal and his stay in this delightful country.

Etienne is a novice traveller. With refreshing enthusiasm, he vividly captures the sights and sounds of this unique place. We smell the fumes in Katmandu and experience the damp misery of his trek through the forests. His mission to the foot of Everest makes for compelling reading. Cleverly, he interweaves background information about the history and spiritual character of Nepal with the narrative, finishing with an account of the recent history and tragic fate of the royal family.

Etienne is French and his English, although excellent, is quaintly old-fashioned. I had to keep reminding myself that this was not the memoirs of a Victorian gentleman traveller. However, my enjoyment of the book was enhanced by the use of somewhat unusual words and phrases. This is a great read and, whether or not you have been to Nepal, will whet your appetite for a visit to this country.
